Can we PLEASE just have a moment of silence now, out of respect for a brave woman?
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 11:15 PM by Redstone
Just ONE moment of silence and respect.

Just ONE moment, without any self-centered commentary about "How has Hillary Used This For Her Advantage?"

Just ONE moment, without any self-centered commentary about "How has this helped or hurt Obama" or ANY other candidate for the US Presidency.

Just ONE moment without any of the other posts I've seen on DU today; posts containing self-centered opinions and commentary about how Mrs Bhutto's death is important to / useful to / deleterious to / advantageous to / ANY particular US presidential candidate.

Just ONE moment to honor the courage of a woman who cared more about her country and her people than she cared about her own life.

Just ONE moment.

Can we do that?

(Edited for spelling.)

how the HELL do you have a "moment of silence" on a message board?

And when does the moment begin? When you hit "post" or at any time there after? Are we all supposed to have it at a specific time? How do you know everybody hasn't already had a moment of silence of their own, and now just want to carry on about it?

Redstone, i think you're alright and i agree with you most of the time and Ms. Bhutto's death is tragic, to be sure but....frankly, this is silly.

BTW< i GET the gist. I understand the sentiment. I still think it is silly.

in my reply below.

When YOU put your life on the line for an ideal, as Mrs Bhutto did, then maybe you'll have the moral authority to call a recognition of her sacrifice "silly."

27. If you think respect for a courageous person who was willing to give her life
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 11:51 PM by Redstone
for the things she believed in is silly, then guess what: You're welcome to stay out of any of my posts that you think are "silly."

I was going to invite you to go fuck yourself, because you obviously don't understand the concept of honoring courage, and perhaps do not understand the concept of courage at the most basic level, but I won't say that.

But I'll ask this: do you think that a person's willingness to DIE for her country is SILLY?

Do you think that acknowledging her courage and sacrifice is silly?

If yourf answer is "Yes" to either of the above, then I'll know where you stand. and we'll not need to talk again.

31. Hmmm...What is the sound of missing the point?
Whoooosh...maybe?

Shitfire, man. Do you think i actually don't understand what the woman was trying to do and the significance of what happened today?

No, i don't think acknowledging her courage and sacrifice is silly, THAT IS NOT WHAT I SAID.

I said asking for a moment of silence on a message board is silly. Not only silly, but borders on the absurd.

But if you prefer, I'll do you one better, and post a silent post;

37. You're not near subtle enough, nor near intelligent enought to cover yourself.
Though you might think you are. You can split all the hairs you want to, and congratulate yourself for being clever, and for "putting Redstone in his place," and that's OK with me.

Take your "victory" home with you, and treasure it. It doesn't diminish me for you to do so, so I don't mind.

41. Moment of silence on a message board = ...............
You've seen many on this thread do it already.

I chose to say something honorable rather than express the moment of silence, but either would do.

Saying it's silly, otoh, not so much.

54. If you deem something silly why not just ignore it?
"..." to express a moment of silence is a pretty common internet forum device. However, I rather think the "gist" of the OP was the distaste felt by the perceived exploitation of the woman's death rather than an acknowledgement of her loss. I've been pretty surprised by that aspect of this tragedy as well. Asking for a thread that refrains from this is hardly silly in my opinion.

34. I haven't used her name to advance any candidate, and I did give a
moment of silence, as soon as I heard the news. In fact, my wife, son and I discussed it at length. But I wonder, is her death any less tragic than the lives of our servicemen and women who come home in boxes every day from Iraq and Afghanistan? I don't see you posting daily threads for them, asking for a moment of silence.

Nice, indeed, of you to use my post as an opportunity to post a personal attack on me.

43. There are threads many times a month honoring the troops in some form or fashion
Of course they matter. This is a thread about honoring a woman who also mattered. Heck, were you here for the OP's that honored the various and too many DUers who have died? Each are patriots and for that, if for nothing else, they should be honored. And they are.

39. I'm heavy hearted
I won't pretend to know even half the nuances of what's going on in Pakistan but as a woman it gave me great pride to see a woman stand up and be a powerful force, especially in a part of the world where women traditionally have no voice. Her courage and strength should be an inspiration to everyone but to women in particular that we can rise above societal expectations of a woman's role and be strong, be courageous and be true to our hearts. The world has lost a bright light and it's my hope that her life and legacy will serve as role model to women that we don't have to accept the status quo.

I'd like to clarify that this is not intended to be a pro-Hillary post but a pro-female post and from the perspective of a woman I am especially saddened at her assassination because the world needs every uppity woman we've got. I wish I had 1/4 the uppity Ms Bhutto had.

in fact, I've been doing that one better. I've been thinking about her all day (and I'll admit, I've also been thinking about the rest of her nation, who may well be about to be plunged into something akin to armageddon) and marveling that such people still exist and sad that one less does.
