Alright. Enough blaming GenX for Chimpy and other things.
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 11:48 AM by Touchdown
I know that it's pretty stupid to blame a whole generation on a mistake, like blaming Boomers for Reagan. But! Like it or not, there is no tit-for-tat in the argument that if that stands to reason, then Xers can be blamed for Bush. The math doesn't add up.

*GenX were originally called "Baby Busters" precisely for the reason that the birth rate went down by 1/3 in the early 60s. We busted the "Boom". So Boomers will ALWAYS be more numerous than us until they die off. GenX can never be blamed for putting anybody in the White House, because we just don't have the numbers to do that. Once the Boomers start dying off, the Yers will overtake us because they're a larger pop. than us too.

*Chimpy lost both of his elections. I will go to my grave believing that 2004 was stolen also, even if we never find out definitively, so we can't be held responsible for something his cabal stole.

*Xers are just as demographically diverse as any other generation statistically, so can it with the "All the Xers are right wingers" BS.

*Just as Boomers were lied to about communism, separate but equal, Gulf of Ton kin, etc. so were we. Consider the lies...
Social Security will never be there for you, kid! I heard that in 1979.
The Media has a liberal Bias.
Reagan won the Cold War.
Unions have no purpose any longer.
The list goes on.

As far as us being "pampered, privileged, and getting much more than us" load of bull, consider...

*You got Ford Mustangs for $2500. We got $15,000 Honda Preludes.
*Your houses in the 70s costed $20-30,000. Ours in the 90s were more than $100 depending on the region.
*You had 25% union membership in the workforce. Our work world consisted of less than 12% union membership. We also had the propaganda drummed into us (mostly by people older than Boomers) that unions were unnecessary and harmful to our employment security.
*You saw the landing on the moon. We watched a shuttle explode.
*You had the Great Society. We had "Just say no!"
*You had Edward R. Murrow. We had Oprah.
*You had Bobby Kennedy. We had Michael Dukakis.
*You had hair salons for your beehives. We had to put Kool-Aid in our hair.
*You had Sean Connery. We had Roger Moore.
*You had free love. We still have AIDS.

In fairness...

*The Beatles didn't last long. U2 is still going strong after 28 years, and they still haven't sold out to a Bond film.
*Walkmans were better than Quadraphonic Stereo.
*Diversity Training is better than gay bar police raids.
*Muscle shirts look better than bell-bottoms.
*I'd rather see Back To The Future 20 times than sit through Ben-Hur again.
*Computers were better than punch cards.

Sorry for the rant, but I had to clear my throat.:hi:

2. Oh
Thanks YOU! :pals:

Let me add:
They had McCarthyism. We had the Cola Wars.
They put the wall up - we saw it torn down.
They had, "It's Cheaper to Keep Her." We had "Where's the beef?"

Now going against us GenXer's?

They had Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan. We've still got Madonna. Doh! And I think I heard "Blame it on the Rain" yesterday while driving in my car.

For both generations (sorry - Genocide is my pet peeve in terms of Global Politics):
They had the after effects of the Holocaust, and the Genocide in Cambodia.

We had the Kurds, the Serbs, and Rwanda.

We all own Darfur.

Hell, let's blame Adam and Eve.

To be fair they did do songs for "Batman Forever" and "Tomb Raider", A James Bond film might be a creative step up from that.

15. As an Xer, my first job was $3.25 before taxes.
And Reagan put a larger tax burden on the working class than Kennedy/Johnson did. What's your point? 3 times the salary, vs. 6 times the price of a sports coupe. If salaries and car prices were commensurate, those Preludes should've been $7500 a piece. They were twice that.

The Prelude's final year, 2001 I think, they were $24,000. Mustangs now go for $30,000 if you want anything on them.

make due, I was in my 30's before I got my first new car, 40's before I could afford to buy a house, now days you see teenagers driving new cars and 20 somethings buying up condos.I'm not saying anyone had it harder, I'm saying we all have our crosses to bear.

19. I was addressing the assertion that Xers had it easy.
...this, by Boomers who asserted it in another thread, and asserted it in many other venues. I was giving perspective with those bullet points, not playing a whose worse off game.

We may have gotten more battery operated toys, but those never make life truly easier.

32. Oooh
See I was in college in 1992 and we have (gulp) VCRS . . . remember those things? We used to tape that class on SNL and watch it Sunday mornings . . . Sandler, Chris Rock . . . :-)

Hmmm - I do have a special place in my heart though for Old School. I went through a break up at the time that came out on DVD and that movie was a male version of what my 30-32 year old girlfriends and I were up to. . . what else could we do?

The good old days were when we were in college and Bill Clinton - whom we voted for in our first round of voting (a lot of that had to do with his Sax skills) was in office.

Maaaaaaaan - college days are the Good Old Days for me! LMAO -

Okay but please tell me you guys love Will Farrells cheerleader skits with Cheri!

33. The cheerleader skits were funny at first...then like much of what Lorne has it was
run into the ground. Not unlike Rob Schneider and the "copy guy" bit. "Pat" was run into the ground. The "Superstar" character was as well...

Of course Toonces is still funny. Jesus, I don't know why...

34. An Xer started ranting about Boomers selling out
...their idealism from the 60s and went with "The ME Decade" 80s by electing Reagan. Then some Boomers said, "Well if that's the way you want to play, then you ingrates (Xers) voted in Chimpy! So there! And Ketchup IS a vegetable!" The argument devolved from there. Neither is very true, but only more plausable with the Boomers & Reagan thing, because of the small population of Xers there are, and the fact that Reagan actually won his elections.
