Britons favour Prince William as next king: poll

Fri Dec 28, 6:35 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Britain favours Prince William over his father Charles as its next monarch, with widespread approval for William's girlfriend boosting his ratings, a poll shows.

More than half of 1,000 people polled said they would prefer the second-in-line to be the next to take the throne.

Too bad for Prince Charles he's living in the TV age. Prince William is young and attractive, as his mother was. Charles is neither.

1. I think it goes a bit deeper than that
I believe a lot of people still blame Charles for the downfall of his marriage. His family's treatment of Diana is well known.

2. May be true for some people, but with most people I think it's the looks factor.

Just as with Diana. Granted, she did a lot of worthwhile charity work. But if she hadn't been pretty, people wouldn't have idolized her as much as they did (and some still do).

3. I agree.
When Mother Teresa died 5 days after her there was still more coverage about the death of Diana.

4. I don't disagree with your premise
but Charles, IMO, was never destined to be King. Has nothing to do with his looks. Mom has never liked his life choices.

5. I don't think it's based on looks, but on Charles being too tainted. NT

6. Given that the entire institution of the British Monarchy is an anachronism, and
represents a figurehead for the country, why SHOULDN'T they prefer their monarch based on looks? It seems entirely appropriate to me in that context.
