Privacy delays ad targeting on phones
Privacy delays ad targeting on phones

NEW YORK - Your cell phone is a potential gold mine for marketers: It can reveal where you are, whom you call and even what music you like.

Considering the phone is usually no more than a few feet away, these are powerful clues for figuring out just the right moment to deliver the right coupon for the store just around the corner.

But first marketers will have to wrest the personal profiles from mobile carriers worried that annoyed subscribers might defect to rivals.

"It's proceed with caution," said Jarvis Coffin, chief executive of advertising distributor Burst Media Corp. "Are consumers going to be spooked by the idea that suddenly their phone goes beep and it's a Starbucks offer, and they are standing next to a Starbucks?"

This has got me wondering, as I need a new cell phone anyway.

1) Is it possible to get a cell phone that does NOT have camera and web-surfing capability ? I like the convenience of having a cell, but I want to avoid, as much as possible, the extra fees and the chance that my own phone is spying on me. My current phone is an older model that allows for texting and voice communications and nothing more. I'd like to keep it that way.

2) My commitment with my carrier expired a long time ago and I'm now month-to-month. If I provide the phone (ie it is not bought from my carrier with the requisite "two year contract" clause,) should I be able to continue with month-to-month, or am I screwed?

2. TracFone might be the answer
It allows texting/phoneservice but does not do the web. As for cameras, most of the models available come without that feature. As for commitment, there is none. You only buy the minutes you need via phone cards. And if you ask me nice, I can tell you how to avoid giving out your landline phone number when setting up the account. :)

PS: You can get a nice model for about $20.00.

3. Actually
Try the Verizon Wireless CDM8905 or The Coupe or Motorola's W315. None of these have WAP or BREW (Web/Over the Air Apps). You can also have your provider block all text messages.

Another tip - if you go into your phones settings menu - you will probably see something referencing Location or E911. You can turn off the Location at 'any time' and turn it on only to support the 911 Emergency System.

I work in the biz - the ONLY time I have my Location 'on' is when I'm navigating. As soon as I get to my destination I turn it off.

5. On the Verizon Razor the setting is...
system Settings --> Location --> Location On (this should be unchecked) and 911 Only (You can keep this checked as it is supposedly only active when you dial 911).

4. I kill the web features of a phone the first day I get it.
I cancel all of the web surfing features and have them cancelled from the contract. Surfing the web on a cell phone with a tiny screen is stewpid, like text messaging. I use a phone for talking and voicemail. Life is simple.
