What qualifies a person to be president?
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 03:42 PM by gowexler
Should a president be someone who is naturally a leader, who has been fighting against the evil and corruption in our government because it was the right thing to do? Should it be someone who takes their job as a public servant seriously? Should it be a person who has the intelligence and courage to fight for the truth even when it is unpopular?

Is just wanting to be president enough qualification?

I look at Hillary, Edwards, Obama and wonder- what have they DONE that would make anyone think they are qualified to be president?

1. U. S. Citizenry and 35 years of age
are the only relevant qualifications. Punch those tickets and campaign away. I chuckle every time I hear anyone chatting about experience. Who running for president of either party has experience being president?

5. Qualifications
Qualifications are simple.

***************************************************************
Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Term limit amendment - US Constitution, Amendment XXII, Section 1 – ratified February 27, 1951

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
***************************************************************

For better or for worse, the person who becomes president is the one with the most electoral votes.

By definition, it IS a popularity contest. There is no way to win a popularity contest "fighting for an unpopular truth"

If we were electing the most capable person, it would be entirely different.

I understand the basic qualifications- but I mean to DUers??

What makes Hillary, Obama, Edwards think they should BE president, besides the fact they WANT to be?

I get the impression that Dennis runs out of obligation to save our nation.

10. They all have a lot of potential
I honestly think every candidate running for president believes they can do the best job.

I also think anyone running could do a great job, or a terrible job, there is a lot of uncertainty. It depends on what the future brings. Since we don't know what the future brings, we end up voting for the person who appears to think like we do, who has a chance of winning.

7. A massive ego, a good dose of insanity, and a scarcity of ethics.
So, far those components have made for a long line of presidents.

9. A
Rich daddy who used to be in the CIA and a brother as the Governor of Florida. You should also have run a business or two into the ground and done substantial amounts of blow in your youth. And looking like a monkey helps. Oh! And God should tell you to run.
