What is the punishment for failing to uphold your oath of office?
Isn't it a crime to swear an oath to uphold the Constitution and then not do it?

Is it treason?

Isn't there something we can do? (besides vote them out considering the current rigged system)

1. Aparrently nothing
It would be great if a thunderbolt would strike whoever disregards their oath, but I guess it's up to us to get rid of them.

2. Impeachment.
It's off the table for now unfortunately. But Republicans are sneaky idiots.

3. Apparently the only punishment is to be ridiculed on DU
and progressive radio.

4. Not a thing
Except for the good people of California and Nevada to vote Pelosi and Reid's asses right out of office. Shit - there HAS to be a Progressive somewhere in California or Nevada that can be run against them. Getting rid of Bush isn't enough for me - they need to be punished for playing Pattycake with Bush.

He's not afraid of them. He's not afraid of us.

And therefore he will continue to not uphold the Constitution and get away with it.

9. there's always a catch
Here's the oath: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I highlighted the pertinent catchphrase "and will to the best of my Ability". Bush has operated at the best of abilities. He just doesn't have many abilities to draw upon. The problem has always been that he was never qualified for the job in the first place. He's an arrogant little slacker that should've stayed wherever his daddy and daddy's friends could get him a job.

11. Disagree. Bush is an idiot, but his handlers are not.
They are evil. They are getting what they want. They are getting away with it.

That's not incompetence.

13. But they didn't take the POTUS oath,
he did. btw, I don't think he's incompetent as much as he's just lazy & doesn't care. He should never have been installed into office. He's got evil people around him because those are the people he was told to appoint by his political cronies and corporate buddies.

I just really hate Bush, too. But I'm super-pissed at the others who won't stand up to him.

17. Nothing. Scads of presidents have done it--Adams, Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, our current squatter
All throughout history you will find presidents who do what they will with the Constitution and receive exactly no punishment for it.

19. Nothing
the oath of office isn't a legal contract. In fact, its very existence is due to the fact that not everything can be dealt with legally. Oaths are meant to make a contract between the oath-taker and God, not the legal authorities.

20. It's bad tactics--and bad for morale--to dissipate your energy attacking your own party like this.
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 05:19 PM by Perry Logan
Just an opinion, based on my belief that a whole new set of Democrats in Congress would end up acting roughly the same way this batch did. I suggest we don't beat them up for doing their best in a heavily-rigged system.

21. the oath is a ceremony
I took an oath to defend the U.S. when I started as a letter carrier, but I wouldn't have been subject to treason charges if I didn't deliver a letter. It would be some other charge, like stealing or something.
