First bird spotted in new yr is indicator of the next yr.
Some people believe that the first bird you spot in the New Year will be an indicator of the next yr. I just had a dead ruby crowned kinglet handed to me.

6. In the Lakota tradition, as I understand it,
a hawk is a sign of strength, and a confirmation of your thoughts. What were you thinking or saying when you saw it? That would tell you Hawk's message to you.

Ho Metaquiatsun.

23. I have an unusual form of hawk medicine.
If I'm driving on the highway and I see a hawk circling up ahead, it means there will be a speed trap within the next mile or so.

My hawk radar detectors have never failed me. No speeding tickets since 1991

27. Ho!
Hey, if it works for you....

Lakota pipe carriers I know always place a hawk feather over the door to their dwelling. If they are out and about and see a hawk acting strangely, they go home to find out what's wrong. Hawk medicine strong medicine.

31. Very interesting! I live in some woods right outside Nashville
and I often see turkey vultures, but occasionally I have seen a pair of hawks hunting nearby for several years. About a week ago, I was leaving the house, and before I even closed the door I heard the unmistakable call of a hawk. I looked in that direction, and I saw not one but 2 hawks going from tree to tree in my woods. I think (and hope) they were looking for a new home.

On a side note, my dog is much too big for them to carry off.

Inspired, I tried calling back to them, but I am afraid I scared them off. I was very happy to see one circling today. Even if they don't decide to homestead in my woods, I still love to see them, they always give me a little "thrill" in my heart. Even though I've always had a Wolf guide.

28. Thank you! Actually,
I was feeling very content and happy about the direction my life was taking. Although my ties are much closer to the Cherokee, I love the Lakota! I cheered when they recently stood up, and I fully support them in their efforts.
I also trust any Native American spiritualty much more than the political machine that most so-called "Christian" churches have become.

29. My husband is part Cherokee
but since his maternal grandmother was orphaned, he can't find paperwork to get on the rolls. Over 20 years ago he became a pipe carrier in the Lakota tradition. The man who gave him the pipe was, like him, part Cherokee. He'd been adopted into the Lakota tribe and learned ceremony from them. A lot of Native Americans do this, because the Lakota tradition has remained and not been lost.

34. I can see that. And it looks like the Lakota are attempting
to stand up for all tribes.

My respect for the Lakota peoples grew tremendously when the SCOTUS finally ruled on their side that their most sacred lands were taken illegally, and ruled for a monetary settlement.

The Lakota lawyers refused the settlement. They don't want money, they want their sacred lands back.

I was lucky enough to be allowed to attend a "Native American Drum Circle" seminar last year. This was a real, competitive group; not one of those fake drum circle groups that were so popular a few years ago. As they finished one song, and they were leaning back still enjoying the "feeling", I couldn't help myself. I let out a "Wow!"

They all looked at me, but instead of a look of "you disturbed my meditation!" they smiled at me with a look of "yeah, you get it! Welcome!"

They actually allowed me to join in the circle later, and it trully was a remarkable experience. Beyond description.

If the Republican candidate wins in 2008, instead of going to Canada I think I will join the Lakota nation. :)

19. Hey, no birds, but here are our animal signs for the new year.
First, we found one of our tiger oscars (tiny) dead in the aquarium. Fifteen minutes later, a couple of young mule deer bucks got into a row in the front yard. Cathandler tapped on the window to stop the eyeball endangering carnage.

What does THAT all mean?

What a cruel s.o.b!! Did he kill her because she was "bothering" him or did he mistake her for a turkey?

I need to get some hens. I currently have four males with the oldest being about 14 years old.

My last two hens got massacred by a neighbor's dog a couple years ago during nesting season.

36. Outside of my chickens, which I see every day of the year,
the first bird spotted this morning was a robin.

And that indicates various things, if you go digging:

"Irish tradition holds that the wren symbolizes the old year, while the robin symbolizes the year to come."

http://www.superiorconcept.org/Firstnight/ireland.htm

In various other places, I'm told that the robin symbolizes spring, renewal, and self-nurturing by releasing old pain.

That all fits with what I'd like to see the new year bring. ;)

out of his cage about five months ago. They were so upset. He's stayed in trees around our neighborhood all this time. On New Year's Eve I spotted him on their patio grill and called the wife at work. Her hubby came home and put food in the cage for him. He refuses to stay in the cage, but he's perched on the grill most of the time since then. He flies away when they try to catch him.

59. Some interpretations
I studied animal medicine many years ago and have a book that explains the medicine of various animals and the message they're giving you. I noticed a few posts naming particular birds so I'm pulling the book out and listing their particular medicine & message to you. I've always loved this native american philosophy because it makes you think about your life and where you need to make changes.

Hawk - The Messenger - teaches you to be observant. Life is sending you signals. Years ago, I chose the Hawk as a personal totem because hawk people try to see the overall view.

Deer - Gentleness - you are being asked to find the gentleness of spirit that heals all wounds. Stop pushing so hard to get others to change, and love them as they are.

Raven - Magic - a change in consciousness - you have earned the right to see and experience a little more of life's magic.

Crow - Omen of change - signifies a first hand knowledge of a higher order of right and wrong than that indicated by the laws of humanity. You speak in a powerful voice when addressing issues that to you seem out of balance, harmony, whack, or are unjust.
