I mean really, does it get any better than this?

This guy is full-on fundie and very open about it. In fact, that seems to be all he's got. Plus, there's the Wayne Dumond issue... which is even more powerful than the Willie Horton issue, because his release seemed to be politically motivated to hurt Clinton (whose cousin was raped by Dumond). Ironically, I've found that the fundies seem to be the most ravenous when it comes to being tough-on-crime, so I guess we'll see how that works out for him with his base. Which is limited, as it is.

I think best case scenario is Huckabee wins the nod, Ron Paul runs third-party and they split the votes.

1. He's very beatable. But I can't stomach his stupid Gomer face or voice.
So it's a wash for me.

2. Don't underestimate his "I'm just a regular guy" act and the stupidity of the average voter.
Many thought * would be a great guy to have a beer with, too. :eyes:

3. Huckabee's brand of Southern Baptist fundiness is a pretty narrow pool
I have to hope that over half the country can't be on board with that bullshit.

18. I don't think that flies this time...
he's a southern Baptist minister, and other than christian fundies, who wants to spend the next four years being preached at? That schtick will run thin fast.

He can't act like Saint Ronny did. He can't paint himself a moderate like Bush did. He can't drink, so you can't have a beer with him.

What are you going to do with him, have prayer meetings? Most people in this country would prefer to leave that in church, or skip it all together.

5. What Huckabee's win proves is the religious nuts still in the Repug.
party haven't learned a damn thing. They don't even know electing Bush was a huge error.

6. The bad part about Upchuck Huck's win
is that there are enough fundie whack jobs in the reTHUG party to give him that big a win. :puke:

16. Iowa has a higher percentage of out-there religious types than other states.
I wouldn't expect the Huckster to do so well outside the born-again cocoon.

9. Wayne Dumond, and his son hung and stoned a dog.
"(Miller County, Arkansas) Two boy scout counselors, 17 year old Clayton Frady and 18 year old David litickabee, the son of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, have admitted to catching a stray dog during their summer session at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, AR, and hanging the dog by his neck, slitting his throat and stoning him to death."

This is not good for the Huckster. He's not only got a Willie Horton problem, he's got a Michael Vick one too.

10. Dumond won't hurt him with fundies, sadly, but will hurt him with everyone else.
If the Dems are smart they will make a big issue out of this, as they should. This is man who would sacrifice women to a rapist/murderer to appease a political bloc.

14. We never make big issues of things like this
George HW Bush had his own version of Willie Horton, but it took over a month for Dems to weakly fire back with that info in 1988.

It took us 4 years to make a big deal of Bush's National Guard Service, and they were prepared for that.

11. Don't "misundersestimate " the Preacher man....
Ignore him at the peril of the Democrats in 2008.

He appeals to a wide range of people, listen to his victory speech. He's persuasive and much better folksy speaker than Bush. That Gomer Pyle charm will suck in alot of stupid Americans.

13. please - Dems said similar about Reagan & Bush, too
and look where that got them.

I see Huckabee and I see a better spoken version of Bush and Bush managed to get around 50% of the vote each time.

21. I think that Ed Rollins sees that Reagan appeal.
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 01:54 PM by Big Blue Marble
I think we would be foolish to underestimate him. Remember many Republicans are feeling pretty desperate right now. In his speech and appearances last night,
he sure was talking folksy, stealing some of Edwards' populism. If he breaks through, I think he could get the nomination, but then the Repub powers will
do whatever they can to stop him. Either way I think it works to our favor, because this is our year to win.

15. He Won't Win The Nomination...
But he will rip the party to shreads first...and it could happen in the next couple weeks. Hate radio will find every little wart, meme and make up a few good lies about the Huckster...the telepundits will sing the praises of the "great hope" (right now McCain) as the "uniter" or some bullshit and the party will twist arms on the state level to ensure they control the convention. I can't see Hucklenuts winning any states outside the South and Great Plains...even on a primary level.

17. Well,
living in a red state, I'm quite uncomfortable with his showing last night. I think he would be able to pull in all the fundies and get them to vote. I can't imagine living in a country under his rule - I just can't.

Speaking of Ron Paul, I saw he beat Rudy Guilliani! That's saying something.

19. Agreed, there's a big difference between him and the last few..
repub candidates. He's a REAL fundie. He's not the faux wink-wink fundie that Bush, Reagan et al pretended to be. Mainstream moderate repubs are NOT going to be comfortable with that. I think he will alienate a large number of them, and get virtually NO Democratic support.
