so, what happens around here
when a candidate gets the nomination? I'm assuming at that point no one is allowed to criticize him/her?
Do the supporters of the non-nominee candidates slink off, or do they remarshall themselves in support of the nominee?

I recall being originally for Dean, but once Kerry won, I wholeheartedly supported him right up until the day after the general election.

I ask, because support and nonsupport of varying candidates has cast a pall over this message board for some time now, and I"d like to see it return to some state of normalcy (or what counts for it here)

1. IIRC, criticism is okay, but bashing isn't.

7. I would gather Skinner gets to decide. It's his board.

4. whoever gets to frame that definition can control the board
on either end.
You can have a group that labels all criticism as "bashing", or you can have a group that labels all bashing as "criticism".

IMHO, the only safe areas to discuss are policy, historic votes, and campaign strategy.

6. As will I
But you can take it to the bank that we should all still keep our eye on them and make sure they remain the candidate we thought we nominated. If not we make it real clear through our usual methods of discourse and activism that we're not above giving them the boot via primaries in four years.

5. I'll support the nominee
And I'll encourage others to do so.

It's really the only way to fly. Helping to hand it to Republicans is just not an option.

8. You should constantly and aggressively test the boundraries and report what you find.
If you get suspended, for instance, then you know you've done something wrong.

9. Some of the pissing on others this morning was very uncool. OTOH,
IIRC in '04, there was still plenty of room for legitimate discussion of perceived faults--I remember the Swiftboat thing and the debate over whether to respond or not.

But gloating over the defeat of other's candidates is disgusting and I'm still undecided, but think we suffered a couple of real blows on Tuesday with the narrowing of a pretty damn good field.

13. For me, this is a no-brainer
I will be behind our nominee, no matter who it is.

Another Republican president is just not an option.
Just the few minutes I saw last night of the Democratic
debate in New Hampshire reinforced my view on that
question---any of them is better than any of the
Republicans--not even close--not even CLOSE to being close.

14. They are not thinking...
They act as if the Democrats running against their favorites are no better than the Republicans. Not very savvy, in my opinion.

15. In general, here are our guidelines on primary, general election contests:
Democratic Candidates and the Democratic Party

Constructive criticism of Democrats or the Democratic Party is permitted. When doing so, please keep in mind that most of our members come to this website in order to get a break from the constant attacks in the media against our candidates and our values. Highly inflammatory or divisive attacks that echo the tone or substance of our political opponents are not welcome here.

You are not permitted to use this message board to work for the defeat of the Democratic Party nominee for any political office. If you wish to work for the defeat of any Democratic candidate in any General Election, then you are welcome to use someone else's bandwidth on some other website.

Democratic Underground may not be used for political, partisan, or advocacy activity by supporters of any political party or candidate other than the Democratic Party or Democratic candidates. Supporters of certain other political parties may use Democratic Underground for limited partisan activities in political races where there is no Democratic Party candidate.

Do not post broad-brush smears against Democrats or the Democratic Party.

fwiw, In practice we realize that the primaries are, by nature, a contest within the Democratic Party and allied supporters - and try to allow for that. Hence the somewhat more flexible moderation.

Once the party has settled on a general election candidate, though, our guidelines are more clear - we request members to support the Democratic candidate.

Hope that helps.

20. You're welcomed. Members, as always, largely determine the tone and substance of our forums.
We simply maintain discussion stay within our membership guidelines, as much as possible. And those guidelines are pretty clear, not rocket science, as they say, and posted for all members to review.

Thanks for understanding.

Just minding my own beeswax.

I think we'll all see what happens after a nominee is selected.

21. Most DUers are mature enough to rally around the nominee
A few on the fringe will be tombstoned because they cannot get over their candidate losing.

22. my friend, this is a dem party site
So valid criticism will be allowed of our nominee.
I am very happy that we might not need to obey HRC.
If it comes to HRC as our nominee, I will wait it out in the lounge.
