Government enforces shift to digital TV. Forces people to buy new device?

Apparently, beginning 2009, TV broadcasting will be changed to all-digital. Old televisions will then no longer be operational without a signal converter. Is there a legitimate reason for this or is it a scam to get people to buy new TVs? Anybody have any more infos on this issue?

2. Your old tv will still work with cable
so I think its been a big push from the cable companies as they charging much more for their digital service than their regular service.

Thank you, Comcast, you fuckers.

3. Only if you still use rabbit ears.
No one I know does. Everyone either has cable or Direct TV - which will require no changes what so ever.

7. Rabbit ears person here. Rural, so no cable service out in the boonies.
And we long-ago learned to live without teevee before satellite systems came within a decent price range.

I have to admit that the slow dial-up is so crazy-making that I actually MIGHT get a satellite just for that reason....

8. I have DSL
I live in Atlanta and tried Cable for phone/internet and TeeVee but the service was not reliable and my cable company sucks lips at making things right. My evil corporate ATT DSL works BETTER than the flawed cable and with the package for "all you can eat" long distance phone and Direct TV it's about the same cost.

4. My guess is that the reason is that the digital network is bi-directional.
Allows to have internet access over the cable line. My guesses are that the aim is to create a market for cable TV internet.
