My two time * voting buddy is disgusted and ready to vote for Edwards
He and his wife were up for dinner yesterday and he was asking me who I liked in the current field I was telling him about John Edwards and he agreed, telling me that he really liked what he had heard from him.

This guy I've known since jr. high, thought he was a republic until he went to our last high school reunion and met some real republics these guys are the majors and colonels and up and comers for Johnson County Kansas, they made him feel about an inch tall, since then he's been down on the republics, but before that he was feeling heavy duty buyers remorse, starting to feel pinched.
Yesterday, he told me that they were stone cold broke now, that he usually used his Christmas bonus to pay off his credit card.
Things are so tight now he couldn't do it this year and is starting off with a balance owed and doesn't like it at all.
If this guy is ready to come back to reality then there are millions more just like him, his thing is mostly economics, and that's what it's going to take to get people like him to wake up.

2. For some it IS economics. For some it's values, despite economics.
We need to talk to both of them.

4. He went over because of social issues
He had a very bad marriage and break up, I guess he went a little loopy and found solace with god and not the bottle. Whatever the reason I'm glad he's talking sense again.

5. I was a kool-aid drinker all my live. Never donated to a campaign before
Have gone without to donate to Edward's campaign.

I voted for *

Twice.

I have much ground to make up for, and many apologies to my fellow citizens of the US and the world.

This cycle, I will bust my ass to make up for it.

7. Thank you Yael.
It takes a lot of guts to admit you were wrong, and even greater strength to get back up and try to right the wrong.

11. I wold be very interested to hear your story, the story of your "conversion."
I went through something like that in the late '60's myself, and have never looked back, except sometimes in wonder at my youthful naivite.

22. Hi Jackpine. In a nutshell
My Dad was kicked out of Hospice shortly before he died of cancer because of a "glitch" in how his insurance policy was written. As a staunch corporate supporter (and free marketer) at the time, I figured all I needed to do was talk with them and we would get this straightened out. After all, it wasn't like dealing with the government, right?

It took threatening to go to the media to get it straightened out.

That was when I put the koolaid down and started paying attention. Suffice to say, I didn't like what I saw.

I realized that my years of academia teaching me all about the merits of supply-side economics were all backwards, the corporations I loved (our of fear of the government) would have us all making $0.05 a hour and sleeping in the fields if they had their druthers, and that the war that I tepidly supported for WMD was all a lie designed to siphon off the treasury into the pockets of the crony capitalists.

It was then that I felt vomit rising into my throat and my outlook changed.

Never even looked to center. I went from right-of-right to left-of-left and I will not look back.

John Edwards speaks to me and for me, and I will venture to say also to those like me who are waking up to the same cold reality.

It is time for change.

33. I am glad you are a convert
But just think how painful it was when anyone tried to point out to you that the "supply side" economics was only voodoo.

Did you want to hear about the voodoo economy then? And you had the academic degrees to bolster your argument.

I have a friend in high places academically and I avoid all discussions of politics.

She still believes that you can just plan your way around this weird corporatized American way of life.

6. 3 * voters
I know are going to vote for Edwards. I think the leap (it is a big one) from Bush to Edwards is due to John's sincerity and the compassion that they thought Bush had. Edwards strikes them as trustworthy.

I've known him for so long and yesterday was a major mea culpa and apology from him. I'm still waiting for my brother to wake up. Sometimes I feel like slapping him upside the head and yelling wake the fuck up.

13. That's great that he did a major mea culpa--I guess that's what I'm still waiting
for from some of my family, who simple-mindedly vote for repugs because of the taxes the Democrats will supposedly raise. They haven't thought through the implications of bush and the religious right nor the cronyism and corporatism that are ruining this country.

38. Yael explained a lot of what they were thinking.
They have been misled and misinformed. Sometimes, like Yael, they wake up. Sometimes they don't. Unfortunately, Yael had to learn the hard way. A lot of them haven't had any really tough lessons yet.

I was a Repuke as a teenager myself. I spent my early 20's alternating between homelessness and shitty dead-end jobs. That cured me of my GOP notions quite effectively.

28. If you biy direct from John Edwards
then it's like making a campaign contribution any profit goes to the campaign and everything is union made. I went ahead and bought my yard sign just now, hopefully the yard will soften up enough this week to get it in the ground.
I read your conversion story, sorry to hear about your father.

31. Same story for me, x2
My sister is as far right as I am left (and thats saying a lot). A two time * voter, she is finally disgusted with the war and the economy, and hates the entire Repuke 08 field. She likes what she's seen of Edwards, and keeps asking me for more info about him. She said to me last night, "wouldn't it be amazing if you and I pulled the lever for the same guy in November?"

And a guy I work with, a Limpballs-listening, card-carrying Repuke, tells me a similar story. Not at all impressed with the 08 Repukes, and of course hates Hillary because he has been long-programmed to. But he thinks Edwards is a genuine guy, looking out for the working class like him.

I'd probably end up in jail for punching a 2 time Bush voter in the face. I'm sure many of them are looking in the mirror asking "what was I thinking", but while they were off in noodleland Bush was fucking up the whole damn world.

35. previously right-wing voters are all over the map this time...
I've been noticing that a lot of previously right-wing voters are all over the map this time. I've read many anecdotal stories about republicans voting for Edwards, Obama and Clinton this time around.

Regardless of who wins the primary, the White House is ours. And I find that a most comforting thought...
