One of Barack Obama's four New Hampshire co-chairs, who is also one of the state's most prominent lobbyists, entered the conversation of the Democratic presidential race last night with this phrase from Hillary Clinton at the debate:

"When it comes to lobbyists, you know that Senator Obama's chair in New Hampshire is a lobbyist. He lobbies for the drug companies."

"Not true," said Obama.

But it is true.

And while the lobbyist, named Jim Demers, is usually a staple of the spin room circuit, he was nowhere to be found last night. (He also has not returned a call to the Globe.)

Obama aides found themselves on the defensive after Clinton said during Saturday's debate that Obama's New Hampshire campaign co-chairman, Jim Demers, is a lobbyist whose clients include pharmaceutical companies. The Clinton campaign kept up the criticism Sunday morning in a teleconference call with reporters, noting that Obama has repeatedly said he does not take money from federal lobbyists or political action committees.

Obama communications director Robert Gibbs said Demers is a state lobbyist and does not do business involving federal legislation or regulation. He said the campaign has drawn a distinction between lobbyists who are registered to work at the state level and those who lobby the federal government.

"A ban on lobbying money and PACs is far from perfect," Gibbs said. "There is a difference between a college football player and professional football player," he added.

With all the skeletons in her lobbying closet, we have YET to see what is really there.

Reminds me of how the repukes cowered the Gore team in 2000, and amazingly the Kerry team in 04, from saying anything "bad" against bush, because something bad might happen if they did.

Really. Obama is not above scrutiny, and the veiled claim that he somehow should be is not just repulsive in its unfairness, it's downright scary.

Of course, I'll be polite and assume that he misspoke because he didn't know. But the fact remains that Clinton had HER facts right.

In one of last nights debate exchanges Senator Clinton charged that Sen. Obama’s New Hampshire co-chair Jim Demers is a lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry. Obama said the charge wasn’t true. Meanwhile Mark Halperin find’s that Jim Demers is indeed a registered lobbyist for both Pfizer and PhRMA.

The article went on to point out that some fundraisers for Obama are corporate officers of companies that hire lobbyists. At least 10 other major bundlers work for companies that have lobbied the federal government, including Bill Kennard of the Carlyle Group.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has pledged to create a new brand of politics in the Democratic presidential primary by rejecting contributions from lobbyists and political action committees (PAC), but his fundraising records show that he relies on donors with special interests.

Three of Obama’s top fundraisers, who each have raised more than $50,000 for his campaign since January, were registered as lobbyists last year, according to reports filed with the Senate Office of Public Records. In 2006, Alan Solomont of Solomont Bailis Ventures earned $90,000 in lobbying income; Tom Reed, of Kirkland & Ellis, lobbied for the Seismological Society of America, the Nanobusiness Alliance, and the Airport Minority Advisory Council; and Scott Harris, of Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis, represented Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Dell and Sprint-Nextel.
