Edwards, in final push, 'seemingly unfatigued'

Edwards, in final push, stops in city

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

Seemingly unfatigued by 24 hours of non-stop campaigning, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards brought his populist message to Lakes Region residents Monday, telling them if they send him to Washington he will take back their democracy he says has been stolen by big corporations.

Edwards often talks about individuals who he says have been victims of corporate greed. At the Opechee Inn Monday two of them spoke on his behalf — Sandy Lakey and Hilda Sarkisyan.

{snip}

Edwards has been on the campaign trail sounding a populist bell and sending a message that he is the only one with the heart to fight the "powerful entrenched interests who have a stranglehold on your democracy"— a message that brought him a second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses and that struck home with many area voters who came out to hear his speech.

Edwards also railed against the lobbyists who he said have hijacked Washington for their own benefits and claims to be the only candidate who has not taken any money from lobbyists.

"Replacing corporate Republicans with corporate Democrats is the same thing," said Edwards, who said taking money from lobbyists is not illegal but it's part of the status quo. "That system needs to be changed," he said.

Edwards began his 36-hour push to the primary yesterday. According to media representative Ed Vale, he was greeted by 53 voters at 2 a.m. in Berlin, later going to Littleton at 4 a.m. and Claremont at 6:30 a.m.

2. This just shows how bad he wants the job.
He's still going strong while Hillary is breaking down.

I wish him the best of luck today, he's gonna need it.

11. Probably not steroids, but something
I don't know how any of them keep going like that. Speed?

But drug testing? No, we need drug legalization! I don't think that's a big campaign issue, though.

Go Edwards!

8. He was on the Today show with Matt Lauer today
Lauer asked him directly about whether he was criticizing Clinton about the emotional incident and he specifically said no and reiterated he was not there for the incident.

16. I don't get why the "decorporatization" of US politics isn't gaining traction.
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 09:52 AM by LiberalHeart
Edwards is telling us what he'll do. Obama is telling us what we can do. I'd rather vote for the candidate who's talking about doing the job himself, not handing it off to the masses. I don't have that much faith in the power of the people versus the power of the presidency. Not after watching millions march and make no difference in DC. I see Edwards as the only one who's talking about genuine change, and boy oh boy, am I ever ready for change. Obama thinks change happens from the bottom up, but Edwards knows it happens from the top down.

18. Both Ends Meet
I'd like to see change happen from both sides, from the people and the president. I'd like to see the concerns of most importance to the people (whether through polling or referendum) become of importance to the politicos rather than the people at the top doing whatever the hell is important to them and never thinking of the people until election season. I'm of the opinon that the person we need is John Edwards.

19. I agree, of course -- we do need the people in the equation...
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 10:11 AM by LiberalHeart
My point is that the people -- at least many of us -- have already made our concerns known. We've also already done our "hoping." We just don't have the power to change the reliance on lobbyists, the stranglehold the Rx companies have on us, the mess in the insurance industry, the insane power of the oil interests, etc. THAT change can't happen from the bottom up at this point because the "bottom" has already spoken up and nothing is different. What we need is someone at the top to make it happen. I do not see Obama or Hillary doing that. In fact, I see them as keeping us on the path we're currently on, preserving the past no matter how much they talk about change. But I do see Edwards doing it. Maybe he'd disappoint me. I don't know. But right now, looking at the field, I'm not seeing anyone else who comes close to standing up to the forces that I believe are destroying the quality of life in the US, or standing up for the people who aren't now being truly represented.

a day. :wow:
