NH Primary Turnout Sets Record

Hot races and unseasonably warm temperatures helped produce record voter turnout in Tuesday's New Hampshire presidential primary.

With all but one of New Hampshire's 301 voting precincts reporting, unofficial tallies by The Associated Press found that 526,571 ballots were cast Tuesday, breaking the previous record for a presidential primary of 396,385 in 2000.

Matched against New Hampshire's population of 1.3 million, an unofficial reckoning found that 40 percent of the state voted in Tuesday's primary. The springlike temperatures — 67 degrees in the southern part of the state — helped, officials said.

"Turnout was not only high but astronomical," said Dean Lacy, a government professor at Dartmouth College in Hanover.

The Secretary of State's office was tabulating official numbers, but didn't expect them to be available until late Wednesday.

1. Anyone else find it sad that 40% turnout is considered astronomical?
Not even half of the people who could have voted did so.

What lazy, complacent people Americans have become. I guess we've been getting what we deserve. No wonder Congress doesn't care what we demand, they know the majority doesn't care enough to do anything about it anyway. :(

I'm glad it was a record turnout, but that quote in the OP just struck me a bit.

2. And the weather is said to have helped....
that's the problem. Primaries were always settled by just a few. It was more fun when they had the conventions. I know you all don't remember those...but before 1952 they used to pledge the votes and go to the convention and stay for days and takes votes and it was exiciting to see which person was ahead each day.

8. It's astronomical compared to the usual turnout. How is this hard to understand?
If we has a presidential election with a 70% turnout would it then be, "Well 30% couldn't even be bothered to vote"?

Huge (in comparison with the ususal) voter turnouts is very bad news for the Republicans if we can keep the excitement into the general election and have not had Democrats tearing each other to pieces.

3. Whoever wrote that Yahoo article is an idiot. NH has a total population of 1.3 million with about

828,000 voters. If 526,571 turned out to vote, then that's about a 63% turnout.

Edited to point to previous Yahoo article citing register voters.

6. This is why the polls were off
They only poll LIKELY VOTERS. There were around 130,000 UNLIKELY VOTERS. ALot of Democrats voted who do not normally vote in primaries and a huge chunk did so to vote for Hillary.

7. Lovin' it
I wouldn't have missed voting yesterday for anything, but it's good to see such a high turnout. Funny, it was suggested that a high turnout would help Obama, but just the opposite happened. Just another bit of idiocy from the MSM that was entirely wrong.
