CIA Official Wants Immunity Before Telling House About Destroying Interrogation Tapes

AP: CIA Official Jose Rodriguez demands immunity to testify before Congress in destroyed interrogation tapes inquiry:

Attorneys for Jose Rodriguez told Congress that the former CIA official won't testify about the destruction of CIA videotapes without a promise of immunity, a person close to the tapes inquiry said Wednesday.

Rodriguez, the former head of the CIA's National Clandestine Service, ordered the tapes destroyed in 2005. Rodriguez was scheduled to testify before the House Intelligence Committee at a Jan. 16 hearing.

Defense attorney Robert Bennett told lawmakers, however, that he would not let Rodriguez testify because of the criminal investigation into the case. Without a promise of immunity, anything Rodriguez said at the hearing could be used against him in court.

If you have been paying attention to past lesser publicized investigations, it goes like this. The administration okays a minor official to go and negotiate immunity and testify that it was him/her that is the culprit. Hios boss just gave him a sort of general statement and they ran with it. Okay, we now have the crime and the culprit. The culprit cannot be prosevuted, so investigation over. Culprit resigns gov't position and turns up immediately in a high paying corp job.

I believe this is the single solitary area in which this corrupt administration has exceeded the incompetent level.

Dems need to show no mercy for the crooks.

Granting Immunity will serve no purpose. He will claim that he thought his boss
wanted those tapes destroyed but never actually got direct orders to do so. His boss will
testiy that he never gave direct orders to to so.
End of Investigation.

They WANT to be able to hold a hearing - appease us during an election year.

They'll say giving him immunity is the only way to get the "truth" out.

He'll take ALL the blame, fall on the toy (immunity) sword, DINO Dems will declare victory and NOTHING will truly be revealed.

Just my cynical guess. But it's based on years of experience watching this Congress.

This guy was subpoenaed to testify before the intelligence committee. Doesn't that imply that testimony is compulsory? How can his lawyer threaten to keep Rodriguez from testifying, no matter the reason?

How can these people just keep blowing off Congressional subpoenas as if there were no consequences? Or maybe there aren't any, given the way this congress bails this administration out at every possible opportunity.

It's the same damn thing as Rove and Meirs simply not showing up, or Cheney claiming he's the fourth branch of the federal government. How in hell do they keep getting away with this? Of course, mass media won't touch these stories so, for most people, these things never happened.

I know damn well if you or I decided to go this route, we'd be up on contempt charges and probably doing at least 30 days, and then we'd have to testify anyway once we got out or it's back to the slammer again for another 30.

I can't think of a more outrageous example of our multi-tiered justice system in action, in which there are people who are simply too powerful and well-connected to have to worry about the law.
