National Do Not Call List
https://www.donotcall.gov/

Your registration will not expire. The Federal Trade Commission will not drop any telephone numbers from the National Do Not Call Registry based on a five-year expiration period pending final Congressional or agency action on whether to make registration permanent. Read more about it at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2007/10/dnctestimony.shtm.

Now WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free.
Register Now

Attention sellers and telemarketers: Go to https://telemarketing.donotcall.gov to subscribe to the National Do Not Call Registry.

If you are an exempt organization, and you wish to scrub your call lists, you may subscribe, but are not required to do so.

There is a problem with this list. Starting on 01/01/2008 @ 10:49 AM I have been getting 6 to 8 calls a day from 888-748-4956. They never leave a message and there was no one there if I answered. I have disconnected my answer machine, hoping they would give up. But no. I think it is a machine calling.

I tried to register a complaint with the Do Not Call Registry, but it would not accept the complaint because the number in question was registered on December 15, 2007 and is has not been 31 days yet. I have at least 5 more days left of this harassment. I have been registered since August 04, 2007, so that is not the problem.

All these assholes have to do is change to a new phone number every 30 days or so and continue their harassment with impunity.

And they are trying to get things setup so they can call your cell phones also for both text messages and voice ads. It they can start that, it would make my phone all but useless as I would just turn it off at work and forget to turn it back on.

1. I wonder if this applies to collection agencies
I keep getting robo-calls at lest once every week. They're looking for someone who no longer lives here. I've asked them repeatedly to stop harassing me but the calls keep coming.

3. I had to add this PS
You comment about calling someone who didn't have the phone number any more. We have had out phone number for five years since we moved to MN. We got a phone call some time ago on the ID when I came home. It said US census. It said that they wanted me to answer some questions, and it would take up to 1/2 hour. I called the toll free number. Well the person who answered the phone was not at all pleasant. They said it was for such and such at my telephone number. I explained that it wasn't me. And I said I wouldn't bother to answer next time, since I knew they were calling they wrong party. Boy they got ballistic. They told me I better answer it or return the call, that it was against the law not to answer them and give them the information they wanted. That it was people like me that gave the government a hard time. I hung up. And I don't care what they said if that number with the US census comes up, I won't answer or call back.

2. I have land line and cell
and have received calls on my cell. They leave text messages. And you are correct, no matter how many times you post the number, the change it.

One company keeps calling about a contract to cover services to my car that has expired and do I want to renew it. I don't have a car, don't drive. How they got my name and number, the telephone is not listed in my name, I don't know. They even sent a post card telling me my service contract had expired. I called and told them I was going to report them, I didn't have a car, they were wasting their time and money on this number. They said they would take me off, two weeks later they call again. My son gets upset, because I don't answer the phone, but if the caller ID comes up with a number I don't recognize, I let it ring. Because the outfits wanting money are just as bad. They make you feel guilty because you don't contribute every time any one calls.

4. if you get hangups, or unknown sales calls-

check on http://whocalled.us/

the user comments often have identified the company, and you can take appropriate action.

6. When I use to get those calls I recorded the "Not in service" tone
that the phone company uses and put it on my answering machine at the beginning of the message.

It worked.
