BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. warplanes dropped 40,000 pounds of bombs on more than 40 targets on Baghdad's southern outskirts on Thursday in a major strike on al Qaeda safe havens, the military said in a statement.

The U.S. Air Force dispatched two B-1 bombers and four F-16 fighter jets, aiming at three large target areas in Arab Jabour, an area of date palm groves that has become a haven for al Qaeda fighters driven out of other areas.

The attack was described as part of Operation Phantom Phoenix, a countrywide offensive against al Qaeda guerrillas that U.S. forces launched this week.

Air strikes on such a large scale have been rare in Iraq, especially over the past few months when the intensity of military action tapered off as overall violence declined.

15. Only one candidate pointed out that the war was illegal, for oil...
and that all of the evidence was old and not true anymore, THE REST OF THE CANDIDATES IGNORED WHAT HE SAID ON THE FLOOR AND VOTED YES. THEY ALSO HAVE NOW SAID THAT IF THEY KNEW THEN WHAT THEY KNEW NOW...THEY DID KNOW BUT TOO MANY ARE TOO STUPID TO REALIZE IT.They are all a part of the elites agenda and Americans gladly go out and fight for them to be president....just look on this board. People either don't care, don't want to see reality or are a part of the American sheeple. Dennis Kucinich may be short, he may have seen something in the sky that he didn't recognize but he was doing the right thing back then and he continues to do the right things for Americans but we the sheeple laugh and point at him so we can be friends with the cool kids that are bullies.

I don't know who everyone supports but until people look at the reality of what took place and what continues to take place, we will continue on a path to enslavement by poverty. Those other career politicians had an agenda in 2002 and they have one today and its not in our best interest, I hope someday the sheeple will wake up and help us others stand for the people, if its not too late.

7. I wonder what's really going on here??
And are the Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz connected in any way? Are we trying to send a message to Iran? Is the Adminsitration doing its best to keep the war going until after the election - as proof that John McCain and the war supporters are on the right track? I wonder...

12. We can only wonder, can't we?
The only thing we know for certain anymore is that
the official explanation for EVERYTHING is a lie.

It didn't used to be this way.

11. I hope
there were no classes today.

Yeah, lets bomb them into acceptance of democracy if it kills 'em. Ratchet up the bombings and attacks because it is getting too peaceful over there for little georgie. I think he wants to kill about 5 or 6 Americans a day and at least a hundred Iraqis.

When is congress going to stop this madman? Before or after he starts WWIII?

13. I really wonder what Bush, et al., are up to
while we are all so distracted with the primaries. This is not a good time for us to be trashing each other as we take our eyes off the real enemy within. BushCo can still do a lot of damage in their remaining 11 months.

17. Probably none
Conventional air drop bombs do not use depleted uranium. There is no need for it.
