Obama Supporters: Why do you think his health care reform plan is better?
Its one of the primary issues I'm using to choose a candidate this year as I think its crucial not just to our country's health and well being, but also our economy.

I've looked at the plans of the front runners and chose Edwards as most comprehensive and likely to repair the health care system, lower costs and provide coverage for all.

I felt Obama's was incomplete and lacking in many crucial details, such as government oversight and regulation of insurance companies still providing coverage in a free market system and the long term effects of not providing coverage for all Americans.

Obama supporters, can you tell us why you feel his health care plan is superior?

2. Thanks
I do my best. :D

I'm a little bit concerned that Obama's encouragement of a generational divide among voters is to exploit the fact that younger voters aren't paying attention to his policies on health care reform. But then again, Obama supporters may have a valid reason, its only fair to offer them a chance to defend it.

3. I support Edwards as well
But I think you need to factor in not just what they are trying to do, but how they are going to do it. Let's face it, a president can show moral leadership on healthcare, but has no power to actually implement improved health care. He or she is going to have to work with Congress to get it.

I can see people saying that Hillary's plan isn't as good as Edwards but she maybe has a better chance of getting her's passed, for example.

4. That's a fair statement
One that should also be viewed from the perspective of whether a candidate is a DC insider or not. My feeling is that the insiders (incumbents in Congress) have been lulled into lower expectations during the last several years of the Bush administration. Perhaps someone who is an outsider who doesn't have those preconceived notions can do a better job of moving legislation.

5. The key to getting anything passed
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 09:24 AM by The Traveler
is rallying the people. I congressfolk know the President has the people lined up behind a plan and mid term elections are staring them in their face, pressure may force them into legistlating what both decency and common sense demand.

I think Edwards and Obama both can rally the people. Edwards has the better platform. Hence, my choice.

6. It doesn't rely on mandates and tax credits
It puts more money in at the front to make the subsidies truly helpful. He would implement single payer if he were developing a plan today and isn't afraid to say so. He won't be campaigning against it.

7. If he's for single payer
then he knows that any real comprehensive health care reform plan requires everyone to participate. Setting up a program that's voluntary means people will only sign up and pay into the system when they get sick. Forcing the plan to only include sick people, doing little to control costs and ensure adequate coverage while subsidizing it with taxpayer funds will actually "front-load" the cost of the plan and doom it for colossal failure.

I assume Obama is a smart guy and already knows this, especially if he really supports single payer. His plan is at odds with what he says he supports.
