Gloria Steinem is a civil rights leader
I bet quite a few posters on here wouldn't realize this unless it's pointed out to them. She deserves respect as such. Like anyone is such a place in history, I haven't always agreed with her on everything, but that's okay. ALL Americans owe a lot to her.

Yesterday, someone on DU disrespected Gloria needlessly, just to score a political point. Today, Blondeatlast's thread and the Paglia thread showed that women (and men!) who support ALL candidates can come together and forget making political points.

Yeah, it's cheesy. I don't care.

1. Gloria Steinem really shoved her foot in her mouth.
Not that she doesn't deserve respect for other things.

2. I don't owe her respect, or anything else...
Ditto for her beloved Hillary.

I'm a woman, and Steinem et al don't speak for me. She and her black-slapping brand of feminism can go straight to hell.

3. I personally owe a lot to Gloria Steinem
Her book Revolution from Within was life changing for me. I have always respected her. There was just one point in her article that I was in vehement disagreement with.

6. That's one of those historical mysteries
Where would MLK be if he had lived? What would our esteem for him have been? How easy would it be for us to forget his triumphs if he were still around (as we clearly have done with Ms. Steinem.

7. I have yet to see anyone...
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 01:42 PM by VelmaD
who has actually refuted the initial claim of her recent article...that if Obama was female and his age, with his record, and with his two young children...there's no way in HELL she'd be running for President. Can you imagine the screaming about a woman with kids that age running for high public office.

8. A mom of color would be percieved to be at a disadvantage.
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 01:53 PM by lumberjack_jeff
Add any other factors you wish (disability, religion, appearance) would compound that perceived disadvantage. We live in a superficial society.

Whether that perception is accurate is a different kettle of fish. Oprah would win in a landslide.

11. But her claim that women are never the frontrunner is ridiculous
Clinton was the frontrunner for over a year now.

14. I think the OP is aimed at posts that
seem to have no knowledge of the work of Gloria Steinem and her place in the women's movement. Disagreement with what she said is fine as long as the woman is shown some respect.

13. Absolutely! We need to be aware that the manipulations hurt us all.
This election is so, so critical--for more on that, let me plug this thread by Mccamy Taylor:

An extraordinary history lesson for those too young to remember.

(And thanks for the plug...)
