Notice the multiple lies...

As example: Obama was not sworn in on the Koran, he was sworn in on the Bible. It was Keith Ellison from Minn. who was sworn in using Thomas Jefferson's Quran (or Koran - spelling?).

Thom said the above email is already being widely circulated. This is exactly the kind of fear mongering bullshit the puke swift-boat types will be spinning. Thom had to correct a few patrons in the airport bar he was chilling at who had already bought into this garbage.

We need to be vigilant and well informed to answer this crap with facts and reality.

The rightie wacko's will pull no punches to smear, lie, and scare Americans away from Obama. Know thy enemy right?

Please --- post other corrected facts regarding Obama's past so we can answer the misinformed with accurate and REAL information.

Thanks:hi:

you are going to get a plurality of assholes believing it and preaching it as gospel. It will do somewhat of damage no matter how much you counter it. I mean look how many believe Bush walks on water and how many still believe Iraq was behind 9/11. Get my drift.

4. I received this one in my email this morning, who's behind this?
OBAMA'S CHURCH

Obama mentioned his church during his appearance with Oprah. It's the Trinity Church of Christ. I found this interesting.

Obama's church:
Please read and go to this church's website www.tucc.org/about.htm and read what is written there. It is very alarming.

Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S. If you look at the first page of their website, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. No where is AMERICA even mentioned. Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to join Obama's church... B-L-A-C-K!!! Doesn't look like his choice of religion has improved much over his (former?) Muslim upbringing.
Strip away his nice looks, the big smile and smooth talk and what do you get? Certainly a racist, as plainly defined by the stated position of his church! And possibly a covert worshiper of the Muslim faith, even today. This guy desires to rule over America while his loyalty is totally vested in a Black Africa!

I cannot believe this has not been all over the TV and newspapers.

To think that Obama has even the slightest
chance in the run for the presidency, is really scary.

Click on the link below:
This is the web page for the church Barack Obama belongs to: www.tucc.org/about.htm

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain 'true to our native land,' the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

The Pastor as well as the membership of Trinity United Church of Christ is committed to a 10-point Vision:

1. A congregation committed to ADORATION.
2. A congregation preaching SALVATION.
3. A congregation actively seeking RECONCILIATION.
4. A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
5. A congregation committed to BIBLICAL EDUCATION.
6. A congregation committed to CULTURAL EDUCATION.
7. A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
8. A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
9. A congregation committed to RESTORATION.
A congregation working towards ECONOMIC PARITY.

8. I think anyone is naive . .
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 01:49 PM by msmcghee
. . to think that posting a corrected version of this with actual facts will have any effect on someone who is capable of believing an anonymous email smearing a political candidate. Such people are already looking for justifications for the emotional beliefs they've always held - they will not vote for a black person no matter what.

This letter only allows them to convince others that they have reasons other than blatant bigotry for doing that. Any letter refuting this will now be described by such bigots as Muslim propaganda - an attempt to conceal the truth.

But, I am sure there are millions in America who keep their racism hidden in polite company but who will eagerly believe this kind of crap - like my spouse's family back in NJ for example.

I think that's one reason Obama has been cool toward some groups like the Black Chambers of Commerce. He knows what his main obstacle is in this race. He's no dummy.

The question is . . which set of lies is the more potent. Hillary's "wily femaleness" or Obama's "spiritual blackness". Which will be easiest to exploit in post-primary TV ads that are skillfully designed to appear non-racist or non-misogynist?

Like most people here (I hope) I'll be voting for whoever has the D next to their name. Sad to say, the final outcome in this race could well come down to which form of prejudice is more prevalent with the bigots on the right and the independents.

10. You're spot on

This is also part of the reason i cannot vote for Obama, because I know he's got a much harder job cut out for him than Hilary has. I don't need a candidate i know is going to go down in flames in November because whether or not you believe it, racism is well and truly still here and i just about believe a woman can do it, but Obama, i'd be very worried. We really need the WH in 2008.

You think it will be bad for Hilary, you wait until they get their teeth into Obama, it will be 100x worse, it will be like hounds after a fox. It will be excruciatingly painful to watch. I also dont like the fact that his baggage has not come out yet, he's a politician, you can be sure their will be baggage, no politician is that clean, but Hilary has been through the mill and come through it tested.

12. I tend to agree. I just found this article at FrontPage . .
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 02:40 PM by msmcghee
. . a very popular RW site.

http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID=EEF5D713-ADE1-4F56-ADF5-7D31BCE247FE

Basically it is saying "Oh no, we would never refuse to vote for a black person, how could you think such a thing. Please nominate Obama - oh please."

Despite agreeing with you about racism being the more powerful motivator among those groups, I think the RW and indies also have some serious hate going for Hillary - that isn't exactly sexism. It's more a pure Clinton hatred - that I think will take many possible votes away from her with those groups. That could be more easily exploited than Obama's blackness. Those groups think Clarence Thomas is a learned jurist for Christ sake.

15. Tough question...but I'm not giving up educating the misinformed
I'm not sure which prejudice is the most potent - racist or sexist. Which candidate the pukes would prefer on the negatives has been debated lots already.

Though your response msmcghee suggests either folks are either bigots or not, but there are shades of grey. I agree, the ignorant bigots that are either too stupid or too brainwashed to think for themselves will vote against a black man or a woman because they are bigots. Nothing will change that.

But there are also folks like the ones Thom talked about yesterday...people waiting for a plane, not activists, bigots, party operatives, or pukes. Just regular folks who happened to hear a rumor or two about Obama that nobody has corrected.

I just don't think we should adopt a fatalistic viewpoint that the dye has been cast.

There are zillions of folks out there who don't pay even 1/10 the amount of attention to the political world as we do on DU. I'd like to give them the assumption that just because they heard this garbage, they may not be bigots and are capable of changing their mind.

I think it's well worth the effort to inform and educate.

peace~:)

14. 2 weeks ago I received this piece of trash from a woman I know
It was entitled "Why a Muslim can't be a good citizen". She had sent it to practically her entire address book with a note that we had to read this right now. Most people responded to her with a variant of the "check Snopes, this is inaccurate, false and misleading" message. One guy, whom I'll call "Gonzo", however came back with a lot of stuff on how Obama's church was Afro-centric, not Christian, racist and a lot of similar garbage. He also got ticked off at one of the other addressees who had reminded us that 40 years ago a similar e-mail could have been sent out about JFK - that Catholics could not be good citizens. Gonzo got all fired up thinking that he was being told that he as a Catholic could not be a good citizen (Analogy, meet Gonzo; Gonzo meet Analogy). Gonzo's e-mail was painful to read (I'm guessing that his day job is being a proud member of the 101st Chairborne Fighting Keyboardists). It provoked a number of responses, including one from me wherein I explained analogies, their use and the history of the Know Nothings. In the end the son of the woman who had originally sent the e-mail posted to everyone that it had been interesting to see all the responses, but enough was enough and it was time to move along.

Afterwards I was e-conversing with a friend who had also been sent the original e-mail and asked, somewhat rhetorically, what X had been thinking when she sent out the e-mail. My friend responded that she clearly hadn't been and that she sends out whatever the Republicans tell her to. We shrugged and turned to the topic of frozen iguana falling from trees in Florida.

19. Obama needs to go out and clarify his religious education.
I have read various things about Obama's religion, and his church's website (Trinity UCC) caused me to ask a lot of questions that were answered to my satisfaction on DU (but probably not to the satisfaction of many Americans).

There should be no religious test for office, but the reality is that Americans are obsessed with religion -- not with spirituality, but with religious affiliation.

I am not an expert on Indonesia, but I know a little about it. Indonesian Muslims are traditionally rather liberal. They do a lot of spiritual practices in addition to the Muslim religion, some weird, some like meditation, everything from black magic to Christianity. In Bali, there are a lot of Hindus as I understand it. The Muslim extremism, to the extent that it exists there, is fairly recent I believe.

20. For the hell of it since I'm the IT Manager of my company
I checked our Barracuda Spam Filter for this crap. I figured those emails would be listed and of course several were. Going to the usual wingnuts. The senders and recipients are college-educated and managers but still stupid wingnuts!

As much as I remind users to check Snopes at least they still believe this crap if it's in an email.

I can't block this stuff if they've whitelisted the sender. Of course if they haven't and it's been blocked by the Barracuda since this is business email I don't feel any obligation to deliver or whitelist.

21. This was my
response I blasted to everyone they sent it to.

I think it’s amazing when the original sender of this crap says…..

“We checked this out on " snopes.com". It is factual. Check for yourself.”

So you check it out, as they ask you to do, and you find the whole thing is a bunch of lies.

Not only is just about everything about Obama lies, but the original “check it out” is a lie. See below.

Oh yeah, Hillary is not really a woman. She comes from a long line of alien space goats brought to our planet from the evil dark planet Gore, around 3500BC.

Check it out, it’s true I swear!

This is the page directly from Snopes.com..........

Then I copied and pasted the Snopes page in the e-mail.

Here is one response that I got back. These people are incredible.

Not really sure who you are or why you feel you have the right to send emails to people you don't know but when you can actually prove that what is said in this email is "crap" as you so eliquently put it then you can forward it. What makes you the authority on Obama, did he tell you personally none of this is true, and if so how do you know that he is telling the truth? Depending on which side of the party line you happen to be on decides whether or not these statements are true, Republicans believe it, Democrats deny it. I don't know if it is true but really, how would I? Do you think Obama is going to admit if it was???? Fact or fiction these emails get people talking and if that gets people to the polls, that is what matters. Maybe next time you should do a little research before you send out emails claiming whether or not things are true, you don't have a clue, you only know what the media tells you. Quite honestly, we are adults and can decide for ourselves what we believe to be true or not. I don't know you, you are not a member of my family or a friend and I would appreciate you not emailing me about what your personal views are, vote if you want to be heard.
