Giuliani gives up on Michigan

Ex-NYC mayor once led in state polls
By Chad Selweski
Macomb Daily Staff Writer

Rudy Giuliani's campaign is pulling the plug on Michigan after serving as this state's Republican front-runner for most of 2007.
With his support plummeting to single digits in a new poll, the former New York City mayor has planned no campaign stops here before Tuesday's primary. Giuliani's Michigan campaign chair, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, said the few campaign staffers in Michigan are pulling up stakes and heading to other key states.

Miller said Giuliani is standing firm with his do-or-die plan to forge a win in the Jan. 29 Florida primary and then rack up a bounty of GOP delegates on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, when two dozen states vote.

"He's going to the mat with the Florida strategy," said Miller, a Harrison Township Republican. "It's risky. It's a unique strategy. But this is a unique year."

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is also apparently giving up on Michigan, with no plans to campaign here, as of Wednesday afternoon. That makes Tuesday's GOP primary a three-way race between Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Mitt Romney.

With McCain riding momentum, the Arizona senator scheduled 13 stops in Michigan before Election Day, including one in Warren on Saturday morning. On Wednesday, he campaigned in Grand Rapids and Oakland County.

1. Michigan must be feeling neglected.
Unless they can take solace at the notion of Mitt giving up on South Carolina to focus on Michigan.

The GOP is going to be a big mess. It's likely to go all the way to the convention.

2. it's insane on their side, more insane than usual, just when you think there's a front runner
there isn't. Guiliani's strategy is either just so crazy that it might work or just so bad that he's finished, i'm hoping for finished.

10. I think Rudy is simply trying to survive without any embarrassing losses.
He's banking on this making it all the way to the convention where he hopes to pull off a miracle.

17. Many retired and ex-New Yorkers are here in Florida. They are
not fond of him at all. Wonder if that was a consideration when he did the heavy FL investment. Silly man..
