Tornado touches down in Portland,Vancouver area
By LIZA JAVIER / NWCN.com and TERESA BLACKMAN / KGW.com

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A tornado touched down in North Vancouver in southwest Washington just after noon Thursday.

So far, no injuries have been reported but authorities have confirmed the tornado sighting. Several people are reporting that the tornado is moving to the east, toward Orchards. Residents in the area are urged to take cover.

This dopplar radar shot shows the tornado in the southwest Washington that touched down early Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Clark County and Skamania County. The tornado warning for Skamania County has since ended.

5. I couldn't believe when the Weather Channel broke in with that...
I was watching worried about family in Ohio, with that huge line of storms sweeping up the Southeast into the Ohio Valley. Then they start showing a tornado watch in Vancouver, with sightings of one on the ground.

It's still and calm as can be up here in the foothills of North Cascades.

6. Just had the rainstorm pass overhead
Holy mackarel, what a downpour! No thunder or funnel clouds, but the rain was so loud I had to stop the movie I was watching. But they had snow somewhere today, I'm sure, so that means global climate change is a hoax, right Sen. Coburn?

8. I used to live there.
I'm headed for the Columbian homepage right now. Your mayor had a LTTE in the Washington Post advocating the purchase of F-22s the other day. I couldn't figure why he would write that.

10. No word on injuries
I'm watching KATU Channel 2, which is currently running photos e-mailed to them by viewers. From what I can tell, a tornado actually touched down in or near the Hazel Dell area of Vancouver, and was there and gone in about 45 seconds. Power out in some localized areas and pictures of a lot of vehicles shoved around. Trees down, and a billboard went flying at 78th and St. John's in Vancouver.

I'll post more info as it comes in.

13. Local ABC affiliate web site
http://www.katu.com/

They have a picture of a car that got pushed around by the wind.

More local footage, and they're reading viewer e-mails describing events. Lots of descriptions of property damage, photo of a trailer on its side, but no word yet on injuries and no report of any deaths.

Vancouver is the site of the only deadly tornado ever to strike either Washington or Oregon. Six people died and 300 were injured on April 5, 1972 when a tornado moved through the city.

Both Washington and Oregon average about one tornado a year each somewhere in the state. For Washington, 2007 was the first time since 2002 that no tornado was reported.

If confirmed as a tornado, this would be the only the third time since 1950 that a tornado was recorded in Washington state in January.

20. I live in Orchards
I heard a lot of wind and thunder, but didn't know there was a tornado. My power did go out for a little while. The wind didn't seem to do anything here. The last big wind, my storage shed ended up upside down in the neighbor's back yard. Glad that didn't happen again. I'll have to turn on the local news and see what did happen this morning.
