1. He was alive? I'm glad he had a long life (or he presumably did)
But I didn't even appreciate that he was still with us.

19. One month younger
than my Mom. She passed in '01 and never climbed Everest but she did raise 6 kids...does that count?

I remember reading about him and being very, VERY inspired! What a feat. Rest in peace, Sir.

18. I thought he was dead until that controversy regarding the "left behind Everest climber" .....
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 06:50 PM by Kingshakabobo
......happened a year or two ago. He spoke up against the climbers that left the injured climber for dead.

2. This was from shock brought on by John Kerry endorsing Tenzig Norgay.
But seriously, RIP. Hillary was a cool guy.

8. Gotta love the "conqueror" stuff
That's about the last British conquest, unless you count the Falkland Islands and Amy Winehouse.

All of whom needed immigrant labor.

11. What about sailing around the globe nonstop?
That was 1968 by Robin Knox-Johnston.

17. I thought you'd mention Bernard Moitessier
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 06:47 PM by djohnson
The Frenchman could have won the race, but decided to turn around and sail around the global again.

BTW, sorry about the tangent. My greatest sympathies to Sir Edmund Hillary's family.

21. No, but I was harsh on Britain. And, in the process, New Zealand.
As an American, that is not fair.

My best condolences to the family of Sir Edmund Hillary.

After all, he made it up there and was either one or two.

Sorry about my tangent, too.

9. His adventures fired my imagination and his
generosity helped teach me to be more giving in life and his humility made him one of my life heroes from an early age.

Rest in peace, Sir Edmund Hillary. You will always be remembered.

14. Aw, that's sad.
But it's hard to imagine a life more richly lived.

FWIW, he always acknowleged his debt to the Sherpa people, and devoted much of his life to giving back to the community in the Everest area. He was also an activist for the environment. He used his fame to work for the light.
