Bush Untroubled by Pressure From Media
Presidentin' isn't such "hard work" after all-

President Bush has become so confident of his mastery of the issues -- and the media -- that he doesn't feel much pressure when he holds news conferences these days. To get ready for his presser on Valentine's Day -- his first of the new year -- Bush read some briefing materials the day before, but he spent only an hour with his aides going over possible questions and answers on the morning of the event.

He and his aides correctly predicted all the topics, Bush advisers say......Bush's advisers say he already knows what he thinks about the issues of the day so there is no need for intensive rehearsals or exhaustive prep work. "The president is confident that you're not going to stump him," a White House aide told U.S. News.
...
Bush's verdict after years of disdaining these media encounters because he feared looking silly when reporters played a game of "gotcha": News conferences are no big deal. He was also quite pleased with himself for refusing to comment on the 2008 presidential race because he doesn't want to be "pundit in chief." That remark wasn't pre-cooked by advisers, a Bush aide said. "It came out of his head."

Can there be any more clear evidence that the press is failing in its adversarial duties?

1. Really. Your last sentence says it all.
He should be sweating bullets prior to meeting with the press.

4. Wow, how impressive!
"He was also quite pleased with himself for refusing to comment on the 2008 presidential race because he doesn't want to be "pundit in chief." That remark wasn't pre-cooked by advisers, a Bush aide said. "It came out of his head."

Don't you just want to pat him on the head and tell him what a good boy he is?

6. Good post.
I think that these are two distinct, but closely related, issues. It is obvious, from the information regarding the administration's control over the Washington media, that the corporate nature of the "mainstream" media has resulted in their betraying the public's trust.

The Plame scandal also shows that despite their claims that they really don't pay close attention to negative press, that they sure as heck do. That includes Bush.

10. Absolutely. I remember an event he did where college students stumped him
The issue was contractors in Iraq and under whose jurisdiction the policing of them fell. He was stymied and looked like the fool that he is.

There are so many tangential notes to hit around All Things Plame that DOZENS of questions could be asked of him and parlayed into front page news.

9. They sure make a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to the dems
If a dem wears two different colored socks they talk about it for a week.

By the way = remember when Al Gore's son was caught DUI and there was comment after comment and it lasted for about a month. Has anybody else seen any thing more about Scaila's daughter. It was just that little bit when she got caught and that was it. Guess again we have the press covering for a republican.
