Father killed family for being too western !!
A father killed his wife and four daughters in their sleep because he could not bear them adopting a more westernised lifestyle, an inquest heard yesterday.

Mohammed Riaz, 49, found it abhorrent that his eldest daughter wanted to be a fashion designer, and that she and her sisters were likely to reject the Muslim tradition of arranged marriages.

On Hallowe'en last year he sprayed petrol throughout their terraced home in Accrington, Lancs, and set it alight.

Caneze Riaz, 39, woke and tried to protect her three-year-old child, Hannah, who was sleeping with her, but was overcome by fumes. Her other daughters, Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 13, and Alisha, 10, died elsewhere in the house.

Riaz, who had spent the evening drinking, set himself on fire and died two days later.

2. This isn't a cultural problem. This was a mental problem with the father.

Culture was simply a mask here. Any saner father would've voiced his disagreements with his family members adopting a more westernized lifestyle, but this is insanity. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

5. True for the most part but
culture definitely plays a role.

11. No.
Maybe in this particular disagreement it played a role, but what he DID was not cultural. This happens all the time.

Men have more of a tendency toward that "if I can't have you, no one can" mentality.

14. And honor killings?
Are those widespread in every culture? Look, different cultures have different overlays of misogynism. And yes, I do believe that in certain cultures it takes a more severe form.

15. This wasn't an honor killing --
this was a man having serious problems within his family (the extent of which we cannot possibly know) who chose to kill them and kill himself, most likely in order to avoid losing them by other means (which is very very common in Western culture).

7. Riaz had spent the evening drinking?
Seems like his daughters weren't the only ones getting "westernized."

8. If he felt so strongly then he shouldn't have moved to the UK
...or engaged in an arranged marriage with a girl raised there.

9. I fucking hate people who think they can take others with them.
Kill yourself if you must, but leave your wife and kids the fuck alone.

We just had an officer from the PD here kill himself - going through a messy divorce, very sad situation - the first thing I thought when I heard was how glad I was that he didn't kill his family first. This shit is getting way too common and has nothing to do with the Islamic culture - it's a mental issue crossing multiple social orders.

17. You're right--over the years I've heard countless stories of men
who kill their families or just their children because they have some notion that these other human beings are their property.

And the vast majority of them were NOT Muslim.

18. I think there has been research done...
showing that men tend to kill to hold onto things (wives that are leaving, children who they are not getting custody of) while women tend to kill to escape things (husbands they are too afraid to leave, who are violent).

Obviously not all familial murders pan out this way, but a lot of them do (even a majority).

I think there is validity to the "property" aspect.
