HELP: Socially Responsible Investing

Okay, I know there are lots of mutual funds out there if you want to try to invest "green"
But what if you are willing to invest in individual stocks? How can you research if a company (particularly one that operates in a foreign country) is following fair labor standards and not engaging in environmentally destructive processes? Obviously, one can't trust the company's website.

For example, I am thinking of investing in gold. I know there is a "no dirty gold" campaign to help find retailers who buy from socially responsible suppliers, but how do you find which suppliers are doing this?

Please don't just tell me they are all bad. I am looking for websites, information to help me determine for myself. Obviously there is plenty of information out there about how bad Wal-Mart is from a labor relations standpoint, but how would I research other companies?
