I decided that ANYONE who consistently bashes ANY of our candidates makes my ignore list
I'm tired of the vitriol for our candidates. This isn't the DU I love and remember. I never thought that it would spiral down to self-destruction and outright hatred for Hillary, Obama, Edwards, or any of our other now withdrawn candidates.

What the fuck happened here? I thought the rules stated that BEING anti-Democratic was reason enough to be tombstoned. But it happens every hour now.

I said last year I was going to not use my ignore privileges so easily, but with the huge number of hate threads here, I have changed my mind.

Life is too short to watch the self-destruction of this site and our party, OUR party for those of you who are only interested in tearing it apart.

Let the bashing begin.

3. I hope that doesn't include bashing the DLC. I try not to bash
the candidates. I'm not sure where the line is between bashing in sentences that have factual content and those that qualify for the ignore button. Are we talking character, personality bashing.

We need to have some context about where the line is.

72. As a matter of fact, I DO think you have to explain yourself further...
... either that, or based on your unbending interpretation of reality, adjust your Lexapro dosage.

Listen, if DEMOCRATS don't like the way the DEMOCRATIC party is being handled, given some of the ideas as has been put forth by the DLC and in turn, candidates that ultimately are supported with DLC big money machines, then I say the DEMOCRATIC thing to do is to

BASH THE SHIT OUT OF THEM! To do anything else within our party would continue this party on the path to becoming the LEMMING Party, and NOT the Democratic Party.

So, get off your high horse! Develop some skin, for Christ's sake!

bash

"to strike violently," 1641, perhaps of Scand. origin (cf. Swed. basa "to baste, whip, flog, lash," Da. baske "to beat, strike, cudgel"), from O.N. *basca "to strike;" or the whole group may be independently derived and echoic. Fig. sense of "abuse verbally or in writing" is from 1948. On a bash "on a drunken spree" is slang from 1901, which gave the word its sense of "party."

25. I believe one sentence would be enough - this one -
To engage in harsh, accusatory, threatening criticism.

I don't think it is sufficient.

I'm not going criticize any candidate on a personal basis, I certainly can criticize on a issue basis. If all DUers can criticize Republicans, we must also criticize Republican-Lite and Republica-Heavy Democrats.

So I believe you are going to have to define when the line is crossed or, at a minimum, give some examples.

These exchanges are about comparisons of the issues and positions - for me. My big issues are - no more killing and no more of my being taken into posseession by corporations and barons and some groups scheme for controlling the earth recources which includes the people and their control. The wanna-be leaders put out who they are going to work for and it is a matter of believing them. Or not. Trying to counter them when you don't requires words, not bashing. If I can't figure out who they are going to work for - the corproations or the citizens or if 'I know', I'm going to challenge them. The question is who is going to be benefitting from the reasons some want to be President. I will fight when I believe it will be corporations.

If they strongly don't want to help me, but seem to want to work closely with corporations - why should I not point that out?

33. Of course, very few people would argue that engaging in...
harsh, threatening criticism is a good thing, myself included.

With that said, I'm concerned that some people are overly sensitive and can't accept *real* and valid criticism of their candidate of choice. They want to insulate themselves from hearing anything that might challenge their particular view, and that is something I have little respect for.

In other words, BOTH extremes are bad.

8. I wonder if we could get the majority of Du to do this
I firmly believe that most of DU wants our party united and successful and truly dislike seeing the divisiveness being flamed daily here. It harms our DU community and brings a smile to the face of our enemies.

Considering most of the flamefests are started by the same culprits they could easily be marginalized if everyone just stopped engaging them.

I'm going to seriously consider your suggestion.

Lighten up - I was just trying to bring a little levity ... something that is sorely missing in the forums these days.

I prefer Edwards but will unwaveringly support any of the Democratic Party's candidates over anyone else running- Libertarian and Independent because of "a vote is a terrible thing to waste" and any of the repugs for all the obvious reasons.

My preference was decided on the basis of his positive qualities and not the hysterically proclaimed negative qualities of his fellow candidates.

I almost completely cleared my ignore list and started over- about 30 or so names added in the last half hour- the BS was vastly cut after 10 or so names.

Well- back to cleaning the crap off my screen!

ps: hope you and your boys are doing okay. You are in my thoughts.

61. I totally agree! I too am going to start avoiding the bashers' posts.
I do NOT want to come to DU and have practically every thread, despite its original thesis, becoming a hit piece on Hillary....or Edwards....and sometimes Obama. "Democratic" Underground should not be a venue for disparaging our own dems. All of them are worthy of the nomination (none of the pugs are) and so the moderators need to cut off threads of anti-democratic nature. This exercise in futility (knocking each other's favorites is not going to change any minds) is very detrimental to this web site.

65. It's simple ...
Saying Kucinich is "unelectable" is opposing.
Saying Clinton voted for the IWR and supports funding for Bush's Iraq invasion and occupation is bashing.

See how simple that is?

67. Yeah, vitriol is bad
There's no need for it. One can argue for the positive side. Some people just can't do that and have to attack the opponent. Most of these people are called "rethugs." But here, the supporters of everyone else will one day find they are supporting the same person they are not condemning. The argument is over who is the best candidate, not who is the best. My candidate may not get the nomination, but he could get appointed to a position under the winning candidate's administration. They are all in the same party. That's why they don't attack each other as much as their supporters might.

85. Politics is a full contact sport...
Yea, there are a few trolls and disruptor's - the mods usually get those.

I think what ever we do to each other pales in comparison to what the rightie wacko's will dish out to our nominee.

The discord here seems natural - its the primaries after all. Last time I checked, that was called Democracy.

DU will be just fine!

We will unite, close ranks, and fight as one come September.

We need all the help we can muster opposing the puke nominee.

All this in-fighting, just a tune up.

The real fight begins the day after our convention.

peace~:)

89. I'm wondering if the Admins could simply ban all posts using Freeperisms & Repub memes about Dems
I am quite sure you all know exactly what I'm talking about here. It's a significant part of what makes the current atmosphere so toxic.

I'm now using Ignore and Hide Thread, and I never thought I would do that. The practice makes me uneasy, though, for the following reason: if DU has really gotten that bad, do I even want to be here any more?

Telling those of us who object to develop thicker skins is not the answer. If we adopt the enemy's tactics and language, then who are we?

Hekate

95. I've taken to just "hiding" threads..
I've been on the DU since 2000, and this primary flamewar not only takes the cake, it burns it, mashes it to smithereens. I have to keep checking the page headers to make sure I'm on the DU and not the freep or some other rw-"moran" site.

been busy hiding threads for the past week - although when I'm accused of being

1. a troll
2. freeper
3. clinton/edwards/obama/other water carrier
4. other annoying accusations

that person goes on IGNORE

as far as who I support - all and none of the above. Not thrilled, inspired or awe-struck enough to jump on anyone's kool-aid wagon. What I am sure of is this - whoever gets the nomination will get my vote in november because the republic alternatives is too frightening to even think about.

now I'm just waiting for the greenies or some other 3rd party group to show up and start a flame war about how there is another choice... :eyes:

97. I'm not sure which is worse,
"What the fuck happened here? I thought the rules stated that BEING anti-Democratic was reason enough to be tombstoned. But it happens every hour now."

So where does censoring others, trying to get others removed from the boards, and refusing to listen to other opinions fall? (not directed specifically at the op, but from various comments in the thread). I'm not sure which is worse.. those shouting down others, or those ignoring.. the end result is the same..
