ne VAH duh ....... nuh VAA duh ...... was there a memo sent out?
I'm finding it pretty amusing listening to the natterers trip on their tongues over the pronunciation of Nevada. Clearly there's a pronunciation that native Nevadans prefer. "nuh VAA duh". But why are they correcting themselves so diligently of late? The mispronunciation did the country well for over a century. Nobody is unclear what state we're talking about, even when its pronounced wrong.

This isn't suggesting we should continue the error. It is to ask "why now?" and "why so emphatically?"

This puts of in mind of Matthews proudly saying "CHEE nee" instead of "CHAY nee" and bragging to everyone how smart he was to say it the way The Dick likes to say it.

Happened overnight. Memos were issued, all media responded instantaneously. I know there are many more instances, my husband and I always comment and notice when an entrenched pronunciation gets overturned overnight. Give me a few minutes and I'll think of more.

Ooops! Here's another - Halley's comet. Pronounced one way throught my entire formative years and boom! one year it's totally different.

Another - Pointsetta became Pointsettia
