McCain Coy on Lieberman Speculation
Alex Frangos reports from Lake Wylie, S.C., on the presidential race.

There’s been plenty of speculation since self-described Democratic-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman started stumping for Sen. John McCain in December that Al Gore’s 2000 runningmate might reprise that role for his Republican friend.

John McCain receives Joe Lieberman’s endorsement in December 2007 at the American Legion in Hillsborough, N.H.
McCain did little to dissuade Washington Wire of that notion. The Arizona senator was speaking Wednesday evening at town hall-style meeting at T-Bones Steakhouse and Saloon in Lake Wylie, S.C. (Atmosphere: various taxidermied critters on the wall, including a skunk.)

“He’d be a great partner in any endeavor, including joining America together,” McCain said in response to a question on the Lieberman factor. “Let’s reach across the aisle, let’s work together for America. That’s what Joe Lieberman is all about.”

Lieberman votes with the Democrats in the Senate, but has been a staunch supporter of the Iraq war. He has made appearances with McCain in New Hampshire and Michigan.

To be sure, McCain said it’s too early to talk about running mates since he’s only won a single primary. But he did make it clear that he doesn’t envision the No. 2 job in the same way as the current veep.

Dick Cheney, of course, is known for holding considerable sway in the Bush White House.

“The vice president really only has two duties,” McCain said. “One is to cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, as you well know. And the other is to inquire daily as to the health of the president.”

1. "joining America together" - LOL
Nothing would piss off Democrats more than to have LIEberman's pasty carcass hauled out as an example of bipartianship.
