Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 10:15 AM by TheGoldenRule
Since there are 2 of us and we'll get the larger amount, there may be enough $ leftover to build a greenhouse out of recycled materials-old windows etc. This has been on our wish list for a very very long time.

Using the money for a veggie garden makes me feel like we're flipping the bird at * & Co. because no doubt they want us to spend the money at Walmart or Best Buy.

Instead, it will be spent at the local garden nursery and architectural salvage stores!

36. I would guess it is for married people who file jointly, which sounds fair
Still, to me it sounds like they are using this as an opportunity to give another huge tax cut to the very wealthy. That isn't going to help the economy, and will hurt it in the long run.

The Republicans are telling us we're supposed to rely on savings for retirement and health care - yeah right.

42. I wondered about that as well. . .
More than half of the adult households in this country are headed by single (unmarried or divorced adults). Why the fuck are our needs considered less than the special rights "married" minority?

People need to stand up and say something about this - loudly. This crap that "married" people need money more than unmarried people has to end.

It's not like $800 will go very far. Between rent increases, higher fuel bills, supermarket prices, and banks, insurance companies, and utilities creating "service charges" out of thin air, you can bet the big companies will not only get their own big tax break, but will end up taking ours, too.

Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 12:19 PM by Dumak
The tax tables for next year will be adjusted to take it away.

I would much rather they give $800 to every adult, regardless of income, so the very poor who can't pay taxes can benefit as well.

It's really about giving the very wealthy yet another tax cut.

The very wealthy should get a tax *increase*, not a decrease

52. Why not just send everyone a box of twinkies?
This seems as wacky as that scheme to send each tube-owning consumer a check to buy a digital converter box when the government FORCES television stations to broadcast in digital. As much as I like the clarity of digital signals (over the air), they couldn't just buy the boxes and give them to people, instead of issuing checks and sending people to private merchants?

By the way, I think many people now on useless cable system will soon discover they get fine reception over the airwaves with digital signals, and will abandon the cable networks with their all-night advertising, their multiple shove-Jesus-down-our-throats stations, and those inane home shoppin networks.

If TWO married people get $1600, that's the same as two single people getting $800. I think it's fair. (It's not like EACH of the married people get $1600. They each receive $800.)

48. Yeah..I hate that little system. . .
I'm in graduate school AND work part-time teaching (at another college) so you know I get paid peanuts compared to full-time educators. My education credit ends up being 3-4 times my tax liability, so I end up getting none of these "rebates." Sure, it lowers my tax liability to zero (*actually, to a large negative) but if something is a "credit" which exceeds the liability, why don't we get carryover credit or a refund of that difference?

Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 12:20 PM by stellanoir
his not so excellent adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan have thus far cost every american 20 grand for which we could be billed for, for decades.

Gas and oil and by extension, food costs have sky rocketed.

800 bucks is a fair trade for all of that. . .right. . .? /sarcasm

How to bribe the short sighted unwashed masses who are simply unable to do math and wowed by short term, and ultimately vacuous instant gratification.

Unbelievable, really. To think he's the first pRes with an MBA, it's mind blowing how utterly clueless he is about most americans' economic realities.

It reminds me of his professor from Harvard Business School who figured * would just end up trashing a few small businesses. Yikes.

If only and sheesh.

An economic policy perhaps brought to us in the spirit of Marie Antoinette. I'm sure at some over priced trendy place (probably in Dubai at the Halliburton cafeteria) one could pay 800 bucks for a piece of cake.

104. And they aren't even "giving" anything to anyone.
This is just a forward of next years tax return. That will really help the economy next year, but he doesn't care. he won't be the decider then.

44. Snippet from WAPO on who may or may not be getting "Buy some stuff now! Checks"

But advocates for the poor said that tens of millions of people in lower income ranges would be left out or not fully feel the benefit of the White House plan.
Lawmakers were instead discussing a $500 rebate for individuals, the aides said, with details for couples and people with children still being negotiated. The rebates would likely be limited to individuals with incomes of $85,000 or less and couples with incomes of $110,000 or less, the aides said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no final decisions had been made.

ah the vicious circle of life. Our economy works like an old person driving in Florida. A big slow car with it's turn signal stuck on right going nowhere and causing gridlock.

Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 12:29 PM by jmg257
It will probably be the latter I am sure.

Edit: Hmmm...but with the govt pushing HDTV, a new flat screen does sound pretty good - we need one anyway.

57. I'd buy gold with it. $800 is almost enough for 1 ounce.
Then I'd put it away until next tax season, when I'd have to pay it back--but at least it probably would have made some money.

58. When Bush sent me a $300 tax relief check early in presidency, I sent it to Planned Parenthood ....
Sent my local Planned Parenthood the 300 clams ... and I sent the White House a thank-you note for allowing me to support women's reproductive freedom with such a nice donation.

Gotta think of a similar charitable donation that'll piss off the White House!!! Ideas???

I'm caught up on my bills at the moment and am already saving a bit.

I'm thinking of picking up myself an M1 Garand, I already own an AK style rifle, but if I didnt I would get once since unfortunately our candidates seem to support a renewed assault weapons ban.

I gave some to Planned Parenthood "in honor of" George W. Bush and requested that they send him a card telling him so. (i.e., "A donation has been made in your name...")

We haven't talked about what we'd do this time. Mr. H may just want to bank it in honor of Bush's Recession.

94. $800 A Year = $67 A Month = $16 A Week
I could easily see that going into the gas tank, to pay for the heating, increases in food and medicine. It's like the magic show of 2001...sure sounded good, but when you break it down, it does very little and doesn't go very far.

95. Exactly what George W. Bush wants me to (read further...)
I'm going to start a Bold New Business Venture!

As I drive through the mean streets of this sordid city, I note all of the old, shabby furniture people have set out at the curb. Some of it's very good-quality furniture that just looks bad, needs repair or otherwise is salvageable. (The particle board crap people buy cheap can stay at the curb. I'm talking the stuff made from solid wood, of which there's plenty.

Here's what I figure: if I buy an old beater truck for $500 or so and put a couple hundred into it to make it run decent, I can collect this unloved, discarded furniture, take it home, fix and refinish it, and sell it to used furniture stores for good money.

Whatcha think..."Liberal Enterprises" or "Landfill Reduction Services" sound like a better name?
