Another day, another taser death. Did the police check this man for injuries
before they tasered him?

He was a healthy 29 year old before he crashed his car. The police say they tasered him because he was "uncooperative." Are they sure he wasn't injured? Bleeding internally? In a state of shock? Any of this could explain his lack of cooperation -- and combined with the taser, could have caused his death. Why are we allowing police to use tasers in situations that call, first and foremost, for immediate MEDICAL attention?

The family of Mark Backlund described him as healthy and said hospital staff told them his arms had been "flailing around" before he died.

"They couldn't get his heart started," Gordon Backlund, his father, said in an interview at the family home in Fridley, a Twin Cities suburb.

The autopsy report said only that "further studies" were needed. The State Patrol has said Backlund was "uncooperative" with troopers after crashing his car on Interstate 694 in the suburb of New Brighton.

"There's an inquiry, and we'll see the result," Gordon Backlund said. "Yes, it's important, and in due process we'll know, but right now it's secondary, if that."

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation, and five troopers were put on standard leave after Backlund's death. A patrol spokesman would not release details about the crash or describe Backlund's behavior.

1. the mn. state patrol has already issued a 'sincere condolences to the family; statement...
...perhaps in anticipation of a lawsuit.

and: interesingly, two of the five officers involved were still in their training period.

2. I guess they are trained to use those new toys pretty liberally.
But since they know tasers cause death in some cases, doesn't this become involuntary manslaughter at SOME point?

3. If alcohol or drugs were a factor, it would have shown up in the autopsy.
What monster have we created giving these "nonlethal" weapons to the police? They went to the crash scene to "assist" the man -- then decided to taser him when he didn't follow their commands. Aren't they given any medical training at all? Anyone knows that someone who's just been in a car accident could be in shock, could have internal bleeding.
