My conversation at Publix today:
As I approached the check-out line, the person in front of me was having a conversation with the cashier:

Shopper (Sh): I would never vote for Clinton or Obama

Cashier: I'm not sure

Nosey Me (NM): Who do you like, then?

Sh: Rudy

NM: Oh! Do you mind if I ask why?

Sh: He says he'll lower my taxes.

NM: Well, what services do you feel we can do without?

Sh: Huh??

NM: Well, we've had lots of tax cuts in recent years, and as a result, our infrastructure is falling apart, roads, bridges, parks, schools, teachers, police officers, fire fighters, medical care for veterans, the government... all can't endure more cuts - when we can't afford a couple of those things on my list, will you offer to pay for some of it with your extra $$$ from your tax cuts??

Sh: I never thought of it like that.

NM: Well, think of the United States as the greatest country club in the world. Because everyone pays their dues. If you keep lowering the dues every year, eventually, the services are scaled back and the grounds look awful. I would rather pay my dues. Taxes are not dirty, they are for a reason.

Sh: Wow. So... who are you going to vote for?

NM: Don't know yet, but it will Clinton or Obama before anyone with an R after their name!

Sh: You're really smart. And you're a Democrat, huh. Maybe I'll vote for one this time.

The cashier smiled at me.

3. Great story! And I love the country club analogy
It's something many of my Rethuglican friends will be able to understand -- I think I'll use that from now on!

6. The Republicans absolutely have to be punished for what they've done over the past 7 years.
Why anyone would consider voting for a Rethug is way beyond me.

It just seems so simple to me. For what they've done, the Rethugs get a Dem Senate, a Dem House and a Dem President.

22. Oh, I understand. I really do understand when I say I don't understand.

One brother in Tampa, the other in Gainesville. :7

When I say it's beyond me, it really translates as "What the fuck is wrong with these people??"

You did a good job, a much better job of being reasonable than I would have done.

12. I use a variation of that
Usually to idiotic Republican knuckledraggers who like to start arguments in public or make stupid comments about tax cuts.

My response: Oh, I don't want anymore tax cuts.

Knuckledragger (loudly & patronizingly): What do you mean? You LIKE paying taxes?

Me: Sure. I don't mind paying taxes so that our schools are fully funded & cops & firemen have what we need, & the roads can be maintained. I would LOVE to pay more taxes if it meant I never had to worry about paying for a medical bill again. I think it's immoral for families to go broke in order to pay for medical care.

Knuckledragger: :wow:

Audience: heads nod

Maybe I make a difference with this, maybe I don't, but at least I might get some people thinking.
