Sorry if I sound cynical, but if this wasn't a presidential election year:
these tax rebates being considered (supposedly $800 for single people & $1,600 for couples) would NEVER happen..

When your a president with an approval rating in the low 30's & the w/all the Republican candiates having rather entensive baggage, what better way to excite the voting public than to try to buy votes...Re-thugs will hope people will say "Wow, Bush gave me some money, if I vote Republican in Nov., perhaps I'll get more".......:banghead:

Usually Republicans pull out the terrorists are going to get you if you vote for the Democrats rhetoric, this time they're counting on cold hard cash to sway voters....

Yes, I know the economy is near a recession if it isn't in one already, but to me, this tax rebate is PURELY a political stunt....

1. If it's like the last time, it isn't even really a REBATE.. It's just an
advance... to be deducted off next years refund.

smoke & mirrors

2. Thanks Anna
i remember trying to explain to my husband about that. A lot of people just didn't get that the previous year's windfall (It wasn't really that much money but took about three times longer to get to us because of all the people who filed when they realized they'd get a "Windfall") would be deducted out of the the following year's refund.

Both of us are Bush haters, but at the time e remarked that he couldn't believe that the public didn't get mad over the bait and switch kind of thing.

4. Thus guaranteeing that those who aren't paying attention get a rude surprise in '09
just in time to blame it on the new Democratic President.

3. Since spending isn't going down...

5. The "good news" is that it's not going to work. The "bad news" is that it's not going to work.
We are headed for a very bad recession. The country is deeply in debt because of the borrow and spend policies that BushCo has been using to pay for a disastrous foreign policy, increased "defense" spending, and tax cuts for the rich.

Trying to paper it over with more borrowed money will do nothing for the economy but make it worse.

Even though the people will welcome the cash they get, they realize, or will soon realize, that a few bucks isn't about to fill in the hole they are in.

In fact, the blatant attempt to pacify the electorate by giving them money only draws attention what real trouble the country is in and that appearing to "do something" is only making it worse.
