Analysis of tiger taunting: Not uncommon at U.S. zoos

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080119/ap_on_re_us/tiger_attacks_29

By LISA LEFF and TERENCE CHEA, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO - Police believe the three people mauled by a tiger yelled and waved at the cat from atop a railing before it lunged at them, but experts say that's only a notch up from the type of taunting animals regularly endure at the nation's zoos.

One study concluded that as many as one in four zoo visitors razz the animals in some way, and large predators like tigers are a prime target. :grr:

Paul Dhaliwal, one of the two surviving victims, told the father of the teenager killed in the Christmas Day attack that while the three climbed the 3-foot-tall railing and tried to get the tiger's attention, they never threw or dangled anything into the pen, according to a search warrant affidavit filed late Thursday.

Dhaliwal, 19, was severely injured when the 250-pound Siberian tiger named Tatiana clawed its way up the wall of its enclosure, leapt out and mauled him. His brother, Kulbir, 24, was also injured, and their friend, 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr., was killed.

1. I just can't get my head around tormenting an animal.
Some people's minds just work differently from others, I guess, making their thoughts suck.

2. And then when the tiger fucks their world up, it has to die.
Such bullshit. It's pretty stupid to fuck with a tiger, even if you think it can't get to you. You can bet your ass if these dudes were out in the jungle they wouldn't be messing around with the big cat.

In a later post I point out that 1 in 4 is the same percentage of people who approve of Bush.

18. I'd say it's more stupid to run a zoo that has enclosures that fail to meet
safety standards, and for an accrediting agency to approve those sub-standard enclosures.

5. They need zoo employees monitoring those enclosures and ANYONE even remotely appearing...
...to taunt any animal should be REMOVED from the place.

Make a policy.
IMPLEMENT it. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Safety precaution for animals and humans.

7. I'm not sure if it's realistic to expect zoo employees to
be able to monitor every animal enclosure.

But it's a good idea in theory.

15. They need to get *someone* to do it or put the animals in a better place..
..a better place for the *animals* - wildlife sanctuaries. Either do that and lose the $ from zoo profits or hire security detail to watch the animals - of course zoos probably care much less about the animals than they do about PROFIT from them.

Stupid humans, messing with nature for money. Idiots.

of environment that can at places like the San Diego Zoo!

23. They were too cheap to install cameras before. Now they're talking
about it but it's no good unless you have people monitoring the cameras.

11. This is a great quote, Webster.
It's so true.

This is the main reason I don't like captivity for animals.

Animal sanctuaries for those who are unable to exist in the wild
would be the exception.

;(

8. Years ago at the LA zoo, I watch two women laugh at and taunt an orangutan
from across a moat. He took this indignity for a while, then reached down and took a big dump in his hand- and like a softball pitcher and tossed it over to them (with impressive accuracy).

Made my day to watch them gag and holler and go running off to find a restroom....

Best time at a zoo. Ever.

12. Witnessed about the same thing at the San Fransisco in the fifties.
At the orangutan cage there was a sign that said "DO Not Tease Orangutan" "Orangutan will throw dirt". While I was analyzing the meaning of the sign, three kids came on the scene and starting throwing bottle caps at the animals. Then all hell broke loose. One Orangutan starting throwing all the feces it could find. Then two more Orangutan came out of their habitat and did the same. The girl I was with was wearing a white dress. It wasn't white when we left the park that day.

14. The stats are probably similar to those for...
...those "Kiss My Ayatollah" and "Kick Their Ass And Take Their Gas" bumper stickers. Possibly similar to ratings for televised wrestling. Maybe some weak correlation to NASCAR fanship.

20. It's not about the tiger incident per se. It's about the
frequency of abuse zoo animals are forced to endure at U.S. zoos.

It's quite telling if you ask me.

21. People tap on cages, yell at animals, etc.
Zoos have to figure out that animals are animals and people can taunt them. Not excusing them, but zoos need to take that into consideration. After all, "no one could ever have predicted" anyone would ever taunt a zoo animal, esp a dangerous one.

28. for Tatiana the tigress --
Dear God, you have given us care over all living things; protect and bless the animals who give us companionship and delight, make us their true friends and worthy companions. Amen.

Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
--Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"

Eternal Spirit, we bring you our grief in the loss of Tatiana and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for Tatiana who lived among us and gave us freely of her love. We commit our friend and companion Tatiana into your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen.
