Founder of "No Guns" anti-gun group pleads to gun charges

No Guns Founder Pleads to Gun Charges
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES
A former gang member who founded an anti-violence group called No Guns has pleaded no contest to federal weapons charges.

Hector "Big Weasel" Marroquin, 51, and co-defendant Sylvia Arrellano, 25, entered pleas Thursday for three counts of manufacture, distribution and transport for sale of an unlawful assault weapon.

Arrellano also pleaded no contest to machine gun conversion and possessing a silencer and acknowledged that the crime was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang.

<snip>

Marroquin founded No Guns in 1996, ostensibly to reduce gang and gun violence. The group received $1.5 million from the city as a subcontractor on anti-gang efforts but its contract was canceled last year after authorities learned that Marroquin had hired relatives, including his son, Hector "Little Weasel" Marroquin.

2. Gun Control advocates do tend to be hypocrites
For Example..

Carl Rowan

Rowan gained public notoriety on June 14, 1988, when he shot a teenage tresspasser, Neil Smith, who was taking a dip in Rowan's swimming pool in Washington, D.C.. Rowan used an unregistered .22 LR pistol. Critics charged hypocrisy, since Rowan was a strict gun control advocate. In a 1981 column, he advocated " a law that says anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail -- period." In 1985, he called for "A complete and universal federal ban on the sale, manufacture, importation and possession of handguns (except for authorized police and military personnel)." <2> <3>

Immediately after the shooting, Rowan offered several conflicting accounts about where he got the handgun. He first said that he had purchased the gun himself in response to threats on his life (which he later claimed had been made by the Ku Klux Klan). He also initially claimed that the gun had been properly registered. However, when District of Columbia police disclosed that the gun had not been registered, Rowan changed his story, claiming that the gun belonged to his son, who "was an FBI agent and did not have to register it properly registered federally." Police officials pointed out that under D.C. law, all guns must be registered locally; failure to do so was punishable by up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Rowan was tried but the jury was deadlocked, the judge declared a mistrial and he was never retried. In his autobiography, Rowan said he still favors gun control, but admits being vulnerable to a charge of hypocrisy <4>.

Barbara Graham...

Million Mom Marcher Barbara Graham shoots innocent man Kikko Smith - also known as Barbara Lipscomb

"You can't tell the kids to stop the violence with the mothers running around like this." --- Mary Ann Smith, after her son was shot by a Million Mom Marcher

After helping to organize the Million Mom March, and even speaking at the event, Barbara Graham was convicted of shooting an innocent man. Now he is paralyzed for life.

The Washington Post reported that "Police recovered three handguns and a TEC-9 submachine gun at her home." Note that the TEC-9 was banned by the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban (AWB).

Don Perata...

Perata is a staunch advocate of gun control. In 1999, Perata successfully drove legislation that updated the California "assault weapons ban" by adding a ban of generically-described semi-automatic firearms. However, he has been accused of hypocrisy on gun control, since he himself possesses a concealed weapons permit - something quite difficult for the average citizen in a California metropolitan area to acquire. Nevertheless, Perata deems the weapons permit <1> necessary due to a number of death threats presumably received from certain opponents of his firearms related legislative activity.

Not to mention Finestien's handgun permit, Rosy Odonnell's Armed Guards...the list goes on, and on...

4. Do you ever discuss any non-gun topics?
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 08:21 AM by zanne
I always see your name pop up whenever guns are being discussed, buy very rarely anyplace else. Do you and brethren email each other when somebody might possibly diss the almighty gun?

5. Hey, that's his schtick. Frankly, I welcome his opinions on these matters
i may not agree with him, but he's more than welcome to post what he feels like on this topic. And if this is the *only* topic he wants to talk about, well...that's cool too.

Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 08:38 AM by zanne
It's a conservative position and I've noticed that alot of gun people only post on gun issues. It makes me wonder.

8. It's not a "conservative position". A large number of DUers
consider gun rights a liberal issue. Just because you disagree with him does not give you license to call his allegiance to progressive ideals into question. That's a weak tactic and is not becoming of you.

9. I seem to recall that I asked a simple question of the poster....
And it was never answered. That tells me something. The fact that you jumped in to his defense does not change what the original question was.

11. You did not ask a "simple question"
rather you accused him of being a conservative, which is against DU rules:

"Do not publicly accuse another member of this message board of being a disruptor, conservative, Republican, FReeper, or troll, or do not otherwise imply they are not welcome on Democratic Underground."

In that post, I did not mention "conservative". And since when are you so big on "the rules"? You can curse a blue streak, and that's also against "the rules", remember?

...that may color your attitude towards progressive Democrats who support Second Amendment rights. It's a legitimate beef.

12. Wow...
Duties to the livestock come first..

The 2nd Amendment, is my "forte" But I do peruse DU quite a bit, and I "from time to time" do join the conversation on other subjects, but it has been along time since.

I will NOT defend my Democratic credentials to anyone, But I will say this, I, have had life long affiliations with the Democratic Party. My parents where union organizers, and delegates to the national conventions. We have even been featured on ABC Nightly News back in the 1980's

I have stumped for Democratic candidates since I was the "democratic poster boy" in our local elections here in Virginia, yes, I literally was the poster boy....On POSTERS. To this day, I even attend the shad planking here in Virginia.

I have remained true to my roots, I will fight to keep ALL our rights, I refuse to pick and chose thru them, like a cheap chinese buffet.

I WANT THEM ALL...

Makes me doubt your "Liberal integrity" when you wish to run down ONE Amendment, and then whine about tresspasses on the rest of the document.

Sort of hypocritical don't you think?

Gun Control, has done NOTHING, but loose elections for us, since the early 1990's.........

Currently in my family...I am the only Democrat left...... I am trying to stop the bleeding of our precious political capital on failed legislation.

The Democrats even lost my parents with the "Redneck", "Hillbilly", and "gun nut" talk.....Even after all that we did for the party.....

We where basically told, "We country folk weren't needed anymore"....
