Ann Coulter Is Speaking At My School - Need Protest Ideas
So, recently, the president of the College Republicans at my university took over the student government and promptly cut our NYPIRG budget by $25,000 and reallocated it to the CR. I found out today through a source in the administration (I'm a journalism student) that they recently booked Ann Coulter for a speaking engagement.

According to my source, the check has already been cut, so there's no way to protest the actual spending of the money, just her arrival. I know we've got some really creative protest veterans here, so what are some ideas of making sure Ann Coulter knows she's not welcome at our university?

Anything that would not result in my arrest would be a plus, something funny and creative that will get people's attention.

Thanks for your help DU!

9. Not a bad idea, but . . .
As we've seen from footage of other would-be pie-ers who've tried to get some calories into (or at least on) Little Arfin' Annie, the skank can shift ass.

I like the placard idea, of quoting her own words back to her. If you can't rally supporters (and there no reason you shouldn't be able to, really), then a simple, silent protest, holding up a sign that says "Wrong Ideas that Appeal to You" or "She's Lying" should get your point across. Have a friend or two along to video the violence, as it will be useful later in the court proceeding.

96. Or wrap you some cat poop from
the litter box...lots of things to do with that!!!

Could wrap as a pretty gift with lovely paper and bow and pretend you are on her side and get up on stage to take it to her (person should be woman who is nicely dressed). Then you could scream "Coulter preaches HATE." Then have a big crowd chime in. Maybe forget the cat poop....just wrap up an empty box. Or 'Coulter Loves the Devil." Or 'Coulter Hates Jesus.'

When dealing with these right wing nuts, I always try to bring up religion because those wing nuts buy her books.

I understand that she is alot of bark...but little bite...in that she can be thrown off her game fairly easily.

Good Luck

visit the lgbt club on your school and get them involved, ask the va office at your school if their are any vets that will help. you need numbers. Make sure you go armed with quotes of anne disparaging differant groups of people, you want to make sure everyone knows what kind of pig she is. I can't really think of big protest ideas but just make sure you get as many people that you can. Get signs, big signs with intelligant quotes on them.

*edit, def write an article about it.

138. Assuming, just for the purposes of discussion
that Coulter and other Republican warmongers should be pied, here are my comments:

I won’t take sides on the hotly-disputed issue of cherry pie versus chocolate cream. Both have their merits, and your arguments for chocolate cream were particularly persuasive.

But if we were to choose cherry, we could sing this song, ripping off the tune from http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Cherry-Pie-lyrics-Warrant/CB42764DEA311B9948256CEA002975B4">the group Warrant

Throw that cherry pie
I really hadn’t oughtta
but it’s her I despise
Makes a mess
Make a grown woman cry
Sweet Cherry Pie

Well, throw it Ann Coulter
And the other spawn
Throw it where we want
cause it’s lots of fun
Throwin’ at the leftists
Throwin’ at the right
I keep on aiming
Till I get it right, yeah!

Throw one at Paul Wolfowitz
Throw one at Hitchens
They won’t notice
Cause they're too busy bitchin'
Throw the pies
Don’t use them to feed her
Can’t stand her lies
But the pies can defeat her.

I scream, you scream,
We all scream at her
Don't even try
She won’t get any fatter

CHORUS
Throw that cherry pie
I really hadn’t oughtta
but it’s her I despise
Makes a mess
Make a grown woman cry
Sweet Cherry Pie

She's my cherry pie
Put the insides on her face
Don’t let her hide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie
Yeah sweet cherry pie

Throw one at Karl Rove
But not at Bob Barr
He’s quit the Republicans, Libertarian star
Ain't got no other kinds, so I’m at an impasse
Unless I throw my cherry pie and throw it real fast

I scream, you scream,
We all scream at her
Don't even try
She won’t get any fatter

Throw that cherry pie
I really hadn’t oughtta
but it’s her I despise
Makes a mess
Make a grown woman cry
Sweet Cherry Pie

She's my cherry pie
Put the insides on her face
Don’t let her hide
Looks so good
Bring a tear to your eye
Sweet cherry pie
Yeah sweet cherry pie

Throw them
All night long
Throw them

7. Make signs
Coulter is the mouthpiece
for the bigoted hatred of
the right wing.

Coultergeist Go Home!!!!

Have every protest member
wear a long blonde wig and
stick their fingers in their
ears and go La La La la every
time she attempts to speak.

Have one protest member dress
like Coulter with duct tape over
their mouth and holding a sign
saying 'STFU Ann!'

21. Love it
Great ideas. There are two ways to go.... ones involving getting arrested and ones that don't.

Hopefully, they can bring signs into the auditorium, but my guess is there is some rule about no signs (this is the New America after all). Have shirts made with your favorite political message (shorter the better) and wear them under coats or sweaters. Believe me, the campus will do everything they can to shut you up particularly if a Young Republican was elected student president.

You could always give out McApple or McCherry Pies at the point of entry into the stadium. Two for a $1.00.

Good luck.

85. That will do nicely. Push the support to it's logical extreme.
Think "Billionaires for Bush" type activism.

If she says liberals are evil and should be executed. You should shout back something like: "Yeah, baby! And after we'll anally rape their children, we'll eviscerate them so they can't fucking reproduce!!! You ROCK Ann!"

Not just hateful, I mean truly vile and disgusting. So bad, even her supporters will think twice about who they are listening to.

Now, keep in mind, if you are found out it looks bad for liberals everywhere.

But hell, yeah. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

A voice of reason, finally. I don't know why anyone thinks that acting like an idiot is going to challenge or reflect badly on Coulter. Disrupt the event, maybe. 24. Call CodePink!!! And make sure you get at least one really good
youtube videographer, even more than one, (go to the media department of your school) lined up to film the event in such a way Coulter does not come across looking good. Also the tactic of people standing up and turning their backs works well. I'd pull out all the stops and absolutely do everything to show this sorry excuse for a human being that she is not respected, liked or even tolerated. Shame on your student Republicans. This says a lot about their lack of integrity.
Also if you're a journalism student is there a sympathetic teacher who is willing to guide an in-depth look into Coulter's antics and what it means in today's political culture? Now's the time to start such a project and it would serve to set the stage for her visit.

I don't know where you go to school, but it seems to me that they hired her to come speak precisely because of the outrage it will elicit.

Her only weapon is the response she gets from reasonable people. Deprive her of attention, and she will wither and die.

to another school. If this journalism department considers Coulter worthy of a $25,000 fee it's got some serious ethics issues. Of course that may not be an option but you certainly should voice your concern in writing to the Dean of the School in a polite and articulate manner. Ann Coulter is divisive and offensive and the school needs to hear that.

If the COllege Republicans think Ann Coulter is an appropriate spokesperson for the Republican Party maybe that is what should be emphasized. Rather than trying to shut her up which just makes her look like a victim, I'd get signs with her most memorable quotes and stand outside the auditorium. Turn Ann Coulter into the spokesmodel for Republican values - hate, bigotry, intolerance and fear.

I certainly wouldn't pay to see her.

I do know she's terrified of pies, per a youtube clip when she reacted as though someone was throwing anthrax on her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv9xa-VxchM

So, I agree with the others.

36. Does your school have a student newspaper?
Your first step is to write a letter to the editor, providing Coulter quotations, and detailing exactly why she should not be welcome on campus. In that letter, announce a meeting for "concerned students" to discuss her upcoming campus visit. At that meeting, you can organize the protest.

That will reach more people than anything else you could do--will bring in many students to assist you with your protest.

103. That is a really good idea...
it will make her supporters think twice about why they like her.

I did something similar when canvassing for Kerry in '04. When I came upon a W voter, I would hug them and get all excited and thank them because it meant that the Rapture was coming. The Rapture is coming...as I skipped down the driveway. I would turn around and the look on their face was absolutely priceless.

If you're afraid that dressing up like Nazis will get you lynched, try dressing up like Star Wars' Imperial Stormtroopers, maybe throw in a Darth Vader - that might help get the point across in a way that doesn't offend quite so much. Bring a boom box playing the Imperial March.

Besides, if all the freepers in the room decide to mob you, you'll be wearing armor...

43. Grow up.
If the president of the College Republicans "took over" the student government then he/she was elected to that position by your fellow students. If you are upset over the cut of support for your organization then protest your student government, not Ann Coulter.

Ann Coulter' ideas will rise or fall on their own merit (or lack of it). Disrupting the free speech of others (when invited to your school) is an exercise in megalomania and demonstrates a lack of class on your part.

129. Shame does not prevent one from speaking,
it causes one to reflect on the effect of one's words before speaking. People that don't agree with Anne don't have to listen to her. Holding signs or rallying outside is perfectly acceptable behavior that may sway some undecided persons. Disrupting the proceedings by throwing objects, shouting, or vandalizing equipment is, in my opinion, conceding that you have reservations about their own beliefs.

This has been fun, and I could play while doing dishes, laundry, vacuuming, etc. But I have to go to the grocery store now (before my ladyfriend gets here,) so I will no longer be able to participate.

Coulter is simply a bore who's worked out that by acting like a deluded banshee she can laugh all the way to the bank.

I agree the two are not comparable, one needs to be challenged loudly the other needs to be ignored like a small child throwing a tantrum.

52. The best advice in the thread
Every time someone does something off the wall to stop her from speaking or attack her with pies and so forth she gets ten times the publicity she would have otherwise gotten. Let her make her pathetic speech to her pathetic group of followers and she will probably never come back because she didn't get into the media to complain about the attacks. A clever silent protest would also work. But disrupting a speech usually makes it onto YouTube these days and makes the disrupters look like the bad ones.

Here is what you do. Try to get an interview with her. Write a story. Ask her some tough questions. Write for your paper. Maybe write an expose on the Student goverment and how they are wasting money.

Helps you, helps the paper, and helps the students understand what's going on.

On edit: Does anybody else but me think that a lot of the replies above are juvenile and will backfire? They make the left look loony. I think we need to attack intellectually. I think we need to attack the power structures by taking them over, not by throwing pies and chocolate milk.

110. You need to get the following video a LOT of circulation at your U.:
"Perfected: The Ann Coulter Song"

http://www.barelypolitical.com/bp-music-videos/episode/CoulterVid

Together with a message regarding the circumstances of CR taking over, booking Coulter, and the date/time of the speaking engagement.

Don't advocate any specific action - let creative minds do their own thinking. Plus it'll give the element of surprise if someone from College Republicans gets hold of the email, 'cause they won't know exactly what is going to happen. And of course if something bad were to happen, you could deny any culpability since all you did was provide information without urging any particular course of action.

I would suggest an e-mail campaign (that way they'll already be at a computer and can just watch the video after opening their e-mail). Get email addresses from as many people you know, then at the bottom, request that each person forward the email as many people as they know at the U. together with the link to the Coulter video.

Good luck!

And to the poster who is so intent on "protecting" Ann's free speech rights, well it may be true that Ann has a right to think that I am less of a human being than her because I am a Jew but the last time someone's "free speech" rights were protected while they spoke out against the Jews, 6 million of us ended up dead. She has a right to speak and everyone else has a right to disagree with her as loudly and crazily as is legal. Or we could just "grow up" and ignore her like they did Hitler, till it was too late.

Take the post-event public press into account; also remember that most of the quotes in the media following the event will be Coulter's, not those of protesters. Read the whole article, and pay particular attention to the quote from the CR President at IU:

Ann Coulter splits IU's crowd
'Ms. Right' draws supporters, protesters
Adam Aasen | | 2/24/2006

Conservative author Ann Coulter drew a large crowd to the IU Auditorium Thursday night. More than 2,500 of the auditorium's 3,200 seats were full, but that number dwindled throughout her speech as many students were ejected for disruptions and others simply walked out after certain comments.

-snip-

The speech drew many dissenters and it didn't take long for public outbursts to occur. Within the first two minutes of her speech, one student yelled out to Coulter, "Go back to Germany," to which another student responded with obscenities. The two got involved in a heated altercation and four officers had to remove the students from the event.

But the police response to this initial incident didn't mean the rest of the speech would go uninterrupted. More than 10 times, Coulter stopped speaking -- sometimes for more than a few minutes -- to wait for protesters to be removed. She often commented that the ushers weren't doing their jobs properly and that the event was poorly organized.

"You are paying me to give a speech," she said. "I mean, if you don't want me to keep talking, that's fine, but I think I'll just do the speech. Hopefully, the idiot liberals will be out of here by the second half of the speech."

-snip-

IU College Republicans President Shane Kennedy defended Coulter's comments by stressing that the speech was for entertainment and attendees should have expected Coulter to say controversial comments.

Find the very most vile statements she has made. Find examples of her calling for terrorist actions and other disgusting statements she has made. Believe me there is no shortage of examples. Gather up a large group of people to attend and have them each pin a disgusting Ann Coulter quote on the backs of their shirts. When Ann Coulter takes the stage have everyone who is wearing one of the disgusting quotes stand up and turn their backs to Ann Coulter. Just stand silently and make Ann stare at her own words for the duration of her speech.
