America will soon seem like fond Hollywood memory
America will soon seem like fond Hollywood memory
IAN BELL January 23 2008

If memory serves, and generally speaking it does not, there was once one of those mad Beatlemania press conferences. In 1964, I think. Mr Lennon was asked how he had "found" America. John dodged the obvious joke, and did better.

"It's just like Britain, really," he said. "But with buttons."

For a child of the time, this was entirely true. They had the TV button. They had the glamour button. They had the hydrogen bomb button. They had the button that could devalue your pound, destroy a sovereign foreign policy and turn everything you ever knew into a suburb of a cowpoke town. A button.

Little George Bush has been pushing his buttons, like a rat at a feeding tube, for several weeks now. His republic's Federal Reserve has been pushing the interest rate button with a will. Yet nothing happens. Room service has been cancelled. For a Herodotus of the age, if any, this is interesting. Imperial America is in primal fear, and we must all quail.

3. This is the most heartbreaking sentence:
"We might as well be Americans."

That says it all.

5. America is no memory ... it's her people. We'll still be here.
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 09:26 PM by melody
Did the British people vanish when the empire disappeared?

I'm so tired of hearing reports of our demise -- I wonder if anyone considers the impact this will have
on millions of American young people. Oh, I forgot, they're American ... they don't exist ...

I should add that the presumptuousness and bigotry in Bell's usual line of prattle is even more obnoxious
as time goes on.

10. The Soviet Union was an amalgam of states with indigenous or long-extant ethnicities
The US only exists as a singular entity.

It will continue to exist as a single entity, whether in fact or loose association. If I were Bell,
I'd not be too quick to celebrate our demise. Right wing fascism tends to ignite socialist uprising.
We're due for one. With Latin America going that way, it wouldn't be a happy fact for whomever is
running things in the future ... especially when it becomes known which political entities participated
in our takedown.

I'm very worried about a Chavez-like overthrow here.

6. Ian Bell is a self described Connollyite Marxist,
A follower of James Connolly, a Marxist who called for the confiscation of all capitalist property and described parliamentary democracy as only a limited form of democracy which allowed one to choose one's masters.

Good luck selling that to most Democrats. State ownership of all means of production leaves me a bit cold.

9. He's also a pro imperial EU mouthpiece
Sort of the EU left's Rush Limbaugh.

He's naturally going to be doing handstands at our demise.

7. Hollywood is fickle; tends to change quite often and sometimes severely.
The pessimism is too much. Ironic, I too have bouts of the emotion - but such an emotion is worth fighting against.

11. Great lead, incoherent article
Bell chases a few ideas around, trying to get them in some sort of marching order, but in the end, it never ammounts to much. Amerika may be in the shitter, but Bell's vague article never really makes the case.
