Kerry sealed it - no more Mass. liberals
First we tried Mondale and failed. Then Dukakis (ugh - the less said the better). Then Kerry, close but no cigar. No more Massachusetts liberals for president. I think Kerry sealed the deal, and wonder if there will be another for at least a generation.

76. As a CT liberal, I sympathize. But I have to agree with the OP
As much as I loved Kerry, I think Mass or any New England liberal is just too easy to vilify. I don't think we in the NE get it that people across this vast land don't even know what Nantucket IS, and when they saw Kerry out there windsurfing it just seemed so "weird" to them. (I had to explain to a midwesterner exactly where Martha's Vineyard was).

I've still got family in Texas and I have a vacation home in Wisconsin, so I get a perspective that I would lack if I just considered the NE point of view. What I hear in liberal New Haven and with my daughter and son in law in the suburbs of Boston are very, very different from the concerns in the midwest and southwest. IT's a different world. Don't get me wrong; I've gladly chosen to be a New Englander. It's just that we can't elect anybody president. Sigh...

19. I am not a big fan of
John Kerry, but I really don't think he in any way completely closes the door on Mass. liberals, liberals in general, potential presidents for Massachusetts. Or Minnesota for that matter. Kerry lost/had the election stolen from him, however you want to express it. But that was just him, not any category he might otherwise represent.

Personally, I'm so sick of the mantra that only a southerner can win, that I want to do violence to people who repeat THAT piece of crap. If anything, we need candidates and ultimately presidents from every part of this country, if for no other reason than that kind of sectarian nonsense needs to be obliterated. I have my own personal regional prejudices and preferences, but I fully understand that they are mine, and lots of other people feel quite differently about various parts of this country.

29. What is wrong with being a liberal
Every single social success that we have enacted for the public in this country was passed by a "liberal fight" for it or a "liberal congress".

The problem with this country and "liberal" is the conservatives have painted the word "liberal" as a disease. That's because they haven't ever passed a bill to help the middle and lower class. So they pan the "liberal" who has. I think it is about time the "liberals" start their own PR campaign. And show this country that all the CONservatives do is steal from the taxpayer and pass bills for the rich.

74. This is really not the way to make your argument
The fact is, elections OFTEN come down to one state. In 2000 it was FL, 2004 it was OH. Kennedy vs. Nixon was close enough to have been changed by one state. Candidates usually get a 10% boost in their homestate, so the state that our candidates come from does matter. If Gore, Lieberman, Kerry or Edwards were from FL or OH, they'd be in the WHitehouse.

There is also regionalism that can play into how people vote. Clinton won AR and many states in that region. Carter won GA and many states in that region.

While I agree that a Dem nominee from New England is going to have challenges that a nominee from the midwest, south or southwest isn't going to have... presenting your argument the way you did is only going to lead to a bunch of flames.

75. Seems someone missed the Kerry threads here.
This post has no value at all other than grabbing attention.

and gotten away with it, no matter who ran. Election fraud has much more visibility now (as an issue), than it did in 2004.

84. I didn't know there was someone from MA with presidential aspirations

What brought on this thread?

JK isn't running again anyway and BTW, he did get pretty damn close to winning. I think the real reason he didn't make it was due to a poorly run campaign, and some suspicious activity on in OH, rather than the state he was from. I'd like to believe if there were a stellar candidate that emerged from MA in the next 10 years, it'd be worth considering him or her. Kerry could just have well been from any state, and he would been accused of being a wealthy "elitist". Of course, Kerry could actually speak in complete sentences and put together coherent thoughts - something republicans are incapable of doing....
