Teacher gets 12 years for touching boys

BALLSTON SPA - The Shenendehowa elementary school teacher who fondled his students is headed to prison for 12 years.

Thirty-three-year-old Christopher Culver says he was the victim of a witch hunt and was railroaded by police. He promises to appeal his conviction.

Culver was a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Okte Elementary School in Clifton Park until his arrest last February.

Culver pled guilty in November to sexually abusing eight of his young students right in the classroom. snip

The former teacher says he plans to withdraw his guilty plea and appeal his conviction.

"The witch hunt...is to blame. I was railroaded from the beginning," he told the court

When asked, while leaving court, what he meant by that, Culver would only say, "Psalm 31."

According to an Internet search, Psalm 31 begins, "In you, Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice deliver me."

<snip>Culver’s grandfather was longtime Warren County treasurer and Republican committeeman John Wertime who also chaired the Chestertown Republican Committee. Culver’s father, Robert, was a former patrol officer with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.

Culver and the school district have been named in civil suits filed by the parents of some of the victims. 1-22-08
