Top Dems stall Miers, Bolten contempt vote

By: John Bresnahan
Jan 22, 2008 10:40 PM EST

House Democrats will postpone votes on criminal contempt citations against White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers, while congressional leaders work with President Bush on a bipartisan stimulus package to fend off an economic downturn, according to party leaders and leadership aides.

Senior Democrats have decided that holding a controversial vote on the contempt citations, which have already been approved by the House Judiciary Committee as part of its investigation into the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, would “step on their message” of bipartisan unity:wtf: in the midst of the stimulus package talks.

Bush, citing executive privilege, has refused to allow Bolten or Miers to testify before the House Judiciary panel about the prosecutor purge. And former deputy White House chief of staff Karl Rove was barred by the administration from appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the same issue.

“Right now, we’re focused on working in a bipartisan fashion on stimulus,” said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), indicating that the contempt vote is not expected for weeks, depending on how quickly the stimulus package moves.

Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), said “no decision has been made” as to when a criminal contempt vote would be held by the House.

Nancy and Harry and many others need replaced. That too will probably never happen. Now I remember why I voted for repubs long ago, the dems appeared weak and willing to go along to get along. Damn

No, I'm not voting repub again, but, can't we get some half a** truly democratic people in office?

Watched Hoyer this a.m. for a short period of time on the FISA situation (wire taps) and had to change channels, he is a weak willy suck up.

5. Now We're "Weak" On The Economy?
Welcome to the election year...and a spineless Democratic majority knee-jerks itself into a bigger hole.

It'd take a 15 minute vote to pass this puppy out, but the fear of the right wing hate machine and the corporate media rules the day. While most of us have known this economy has been in the shitter for months (even years), all of a sudden it's the big story on CNN and the endless "whos going to do something about it" game begins. Boooshie throws out his "stimulus" and now the corporate media demands the same of the Democrats or, obviously, we're weak on the economy and causing the problem. We have 200 plus House Democrats scared of mailers and emails and winning individual elections than for defending the place they work for.

Shameless...

23. But now the BankBoys are in
financial trouble...and they give big political donations so we must make sure that they don't lose one cent. And eventually the public (our money) will bail them out.

I don't think there is anyway to stop this financial collapse....and if these dumb f*cks decide to throw more money at it, we'll get runaway inflation which hurts and working people even more.

And another thing, while I am ranting....why the hell are they going after Harriet Miers? I even felt sorry for her when W put her up for Supreme Court. The repugnants will trash the dems in the media over picking on an older woman. Didn't Rove get a subpoena? And why aren't they going after him? Why? They're too scared of big bad karl??? I am sick of these dems....spineless, ball-less, ova-less scum.

43. It's Called Squeezing Up
Meiers knows where the bodies are burried. Seems like she was in all the DOJ meetings and has been directly implicated...the game here is to get her to testify. Feeling sorry for her? I'd love to see her get grilled by the House Judiciary committee and made to shiver and shake and compelled to tell the truth about what she knows. You want the goods on boooosh, rove, cheney and the rest of the regime? This is how it's done. Force her to testify about who know what and where and if there's a conflict, we now have criminal perjury charges...if she obstructs, she gets contempt and if she tells the truth, we're one step closer to restoring the Constitution.

10. "holding a controversial vote on the contempt citations,"
What could possibly be controversial about this. Subpoenas were issued and ignored. That is "Contempt of Congress" It is in fact the definition of Contempt. What could possibly be controversial about that? IMO what is Controversial is Democrats behavior in not holding those in contempt accountable.

What excuse do States like Calif. have for voting for the right leaning Democrats?

In Okla. we Dems vote for anyone that claims to be a democrat and hope for the best.

Nancy has a problem hearing the ordinary people. Did she ever represent her people? When she was running for speaker I thought she was too left leaning, wouldn't get things done in a repub. controlled House. How wrong could I have been. She wants to "get along" and make nice. Sucking up to george's tax breaks for corps is disgusting.

47. With a scheldule like that
it's hard to find time to have hearings. Besides, they must rush through a tax break to corps to keep our fake economy going.

Your comment reminded me of hearing Hoyer this a.m. when he was bumbling along trying to explain the FISA issue and the scheduling problem and how he "might extend the present law" for another month to give everyone time to get their stories straight - no, he didn't say that - rather, work things out. In other words no one wants to punish AT&T or others for breaking our laws.

I don't see how anyone can doubt that the "leadership" is taking their marching orders from DLC. Yet people will keep rewarding these assholes with votes out of a misguided sense of party loyalty.

This is why the DLC is dangerous. For all their claims of supposedly wanting to help Democrats, they employ people like Marshall Wittman who specifically try to undermine the Democratic Party, even if it means he has to publicly defecate out the most rank and easily-debunkable lies. They reguarly give credence to the right wing's agenda and its worst, most unsupportable lies. They are the real force that tries to make sure this country is a one party state and that Democrats never really challenge the Republicans in a serious way. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-sirota/why-the-dlc-is-so-dangero_b_13640.html
