Most of his nutty family are lawyers, and they sue everyone, and the same time, travel (either by chartered jet or private jet)....

It costs money for lawsuits and overhead.. how can they afford it? Certainly most of America realizes he's a nutjob?

1. 12,000 people voted for him to be Governor of Kansas.
He does have support, and likely gets donations from hatemongering assholes in all parts of the country.

BTW, though 12,000 doesn't seem like much, it was like 15-20% of the vote, IIRC.

2. I read somewhere not too long ago
that he was running into financial trouble. If he has the money to bring him and his half-wit brood to LA or NYC to protest Heath Ledger's funeral, I'd be shocked.

It'd be quite a show, though, watching Fred have his ass handed to him by Big City people. Hell, I might even spring for him to travel here myself just to watch that happen!

4. Alas, he actually has financial backers
Personally, I think Phelch is supported by well-heeled religious right-wing extremists (American Family Association, Concerned Women for America, Ken Hutcherson's Antioch Bible Church, etc.) so that A. Phelch can do the work of these organizations without them having to dirty their hands and B. so that they look sane and rational by comparison.

That is the only explanation I can think of.

5. There must be some way to trace that money.
I'd love to see these guys found out for funding the demonstrations at military funerals.
