Antiabortion cause stirs new generation

At Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Philadelphia, the Teen Board for Generations for Life group, a pro-life group for young people, holds a meeting.
Born into a time after Roe vs. Wade, many young adults are eager to reverse it. And veteran activists are happy to enlist their help.

WALLINGFORD, PA. -- The bell rang and the eighth graders jumped up, eager to compare notes.

"I named my baby Kyle Patrick," one shouted.

"Mine is Antonio!"

At the urging of an antiabortion activist, they had each pledged to "spiritually adopt" a fetus developing in an unknown woman -- to name it, love it from afar and above all, pray daily that the mother-to-be would not choose abortion.

"Maybe one day you'll get to heaven and these people will come running to you . . . and say, 'We're all the little children you saved,' " activist Cristina Barba said. She smiled at the students in their Catholic school uniforms. "Maybe you really can make a difference."

Thirty-five years after Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, opponents are pouring resources into building new generations of activists. Young people are responding with passion.

1. I'll be impressed when self-righteous "anti-abortion" folks...
...adopt babies for real ~ rather than "spiritually adopt" them.

I'll be impressed when they support measures to care for real children in the real world ~ rather than back assholes that cut the care to children in every way they can.

The babysitter my wife and I use was adopted in part because of this fund. She has four siblings 3 of them are also adopted. The pastor at her church adopted a little girl when his kids left the nest and from what I hear the church of about 2k people have adopted over 200 kids in the past 15 years.

Dont lump together those who would cut off support at birth from those who really walk their faith (as much as you might disagree with it)..

6. So well stated!
I was in Washington DC on Monday with my husband and kids spending some time in the museums.

We saw many groups of teens and college students in town preparing for their Tuesday march. They were sporting all kinds of "defend life" clothing. My favorite (on a young man, of course): "no exceptions, no compromise."

I was seething!

How dare they presume that they know best and that they have the right to interfere in very complex and private decisions.

2. Well, idiocy can arise in any generation.
As can the urge to enforce irrational, narrow moral codes on everyone else.

4. For fucks sake.
Here's conundrum for them;
http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN2034583320080121
"CHICAGO (Reuters) - Pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day have twice the risk of having a miscarriage as those who avoid caffeine, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

They said the study provides strong evidence that high doses of caffeine during pregnancy -- 200 milligrams or more per day or the equivalent of two cups of coffee -- significantly increase the risk of miscarriage.

And they said the research may finally put to rest conflicting reports about the link between caffeine consumption and miscarriage.

"Women who are pregnant or are actively seeking to become pregnant should stop drinking coffee for three months or hopefully throughout pregnancy," said Dr. De-Kun Li of Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, whose study appears in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology"

So, perhaps they better make sure it's illegal for women who have the potential to become pregnant to drink coffee. Save the fetus and all that.

Acutally, I have an idea, any of these young women can voluntarily give up drinking coffee, stop smoking, take pre-natal vitamins to make sure they get their folate, have a health BMI, never, ever drink alcohol, anything to keep their baby making machinery in good running order. Also if they have a heavy menses, they should immediately go to the doctor to make sure it wasn't a miscarriage. They'll need to name it. In fact, while they're at it, why not lobby pass laws for all this? As long as we treat a woman's body as a baby factory, it should be illegal for woman to act in any way that may damage the fetus. We could pass a whole lot of restrictive laws, all with the health and consideration of the little bundle of joy in mind.
:sarcasm:
