GORE Releases Video: "Gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women"
Not sure what prompted this, but Al Gore has quietly released a video with a forceful endorsement of equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians. It pushes the Democratic establishment that much closer to a position he now shares with Eliot Spitzer and some other leading Dems, and is prompting a bit of grumbling in gay political circles that this batch of candidates aren't quite there.

"Gay men and women ought to have the same rights as heterosexual men and women -- to make contracts, to have hospital visiting rights, to join together in marriage, and I don't understand why it is considered by some people to be a threat to heterosexual marriage," he says on the video, which appears on his Current TV network. "Shouldn't we be promoting the kind of faithfulness and loyalty to ones partner regardless of sexual orientation?"

Gore's words come after the leading presidential candidates have tiptoed up to, but not crossed, the line of support for same-sex marriage. All three support equal substantive rights for gay and lesbians couples, and they've sought to woo gay voters in other ways: Elizabeth Edwards has voiced her support for same-sex marriage, for instance, and Barack Obama recently scolded the black church for homophobia, in a speech to an African-American congregation.

4. The New Harry Truman....
I just told them the truth and they thought it was Hell...As a straight guy to do otherwise is bullshit....as a child of the 50's I have my prejudices but as an adult recognize they are garbage-any feelings I have towards pudenda or melanin or how others relate are my own and NOT germain in terms of societal fairness...

8. They Do Have The Same Rights.
These are inherent in their being human beings like everyone else.

What they need, is a society that doesn't STEAL those rights.

9. Good for Gore.
I'll never get over the theft. I'll never get over the sense of loss... how different the world would have been with the United States guided by his wisdom.
He's so far and away the best...

This is not meant to detract from the candidate I support in 2008. The candidate who is invisible to the msm.

:(

18. I agree w/everything you said
Since my primary is the very last one, I fear I won't have the chance to vote for Dennis.

But I will be sending him a donation for his congressional re-election. Did you get that email today?

I am terrified the attacks from corporations will hurt his re-election.

19. What a great use of his megaphone!
He is the perfect person to speak this truth. There was a time when I didn't think very highly of him, but in the last couple of years I've come to admire him very strongly. Not to be too dramatic, but he seems like the Last of the Old Statesmen. We don't have nearly enough like him. Bless him for speaking out.
