So, today Dennis withdrew his right on comments that Bush/Cheney lied
us into war. He said it during his one minute speech. There's a link to the video here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2751227

I've never seen him do such a thing. What is going on? Thoughts?

How can we support him?

Here's his contact information:

Washington Office

2445 Rayburn HOB
Washington, DC 20515

Phone (202)225-5871
Fax (202)225-5745

We cannot, imo, allow Dennis to be silenced. What can we do?

It looks like he took down his words because he broke the rules.

ON EDIT: You're not supposed to use words like lie and chimp when speaking of the Lying Chimp from the floor.

We can't have rule breakers speak out against Constitution demolishers. :)

that accusation, however accurate, had to be withdrawn as I understand it.

3. He made his point. Whether or not it is in the "official" record is moot.
Had he not moved to withdraw his remarks, I'm sure we would have seen most Dems joining repukes in demanding a censure.

8. F#ck that. I think we should call him in support.
Ever notice how the "rules" are only invoked when the truth is inconvenient?

(I don't even want to think about how many Dems would move to censure. It's just too awful.)

24. there wouldn't necessarily been a motion to censure
the procedure is as follows: if an objection is raised that a member's words violate the House rules, the chair is required to rule on whether the rules were "unparliamentary" and should be taken down. Most of the time, the speaker withdraws the words and that's the end of it. On occasion the speaker doesn't withdraw them and the chair rules. If the chair rules that the words should be taken down its possible for a motion to be made to debate and decide whether the words should be taken down. While censure is also available, it rarely is utilized, even where the words are not withdrawn. One of the reasons that members typically withdraw challenged words is that if they don't and the words are stricken, they are barred by rule from speaking the rest of the day or from revising/extending their remarks.

28. Maybe it's like that old lawyer trick. Where they say something they know will
be stricken from the record and that the judge will instruct the jury to ignore the statement, but everyone knows the jury will remember it anyway.

7. Kucinich to Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Bush on Monday, January 28, State of Union
Kucinich to Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Bush on Monday, January 28, State of Union Day
Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2008-01-23 19:56. Congress | Impeachment

Kucinich Starts New Impeachment Drive
By David M. Herszenhorn, New York Times

Representative Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio may get excluded from Democratic presidential debates, as he has been recently, but no one can deny him the floor in the House.

And today Mr. Kucinich took to the floor to fire off his latest salvo at the Bush administration: his plans to introduce Articles of Impeachment against President Bush on Jan. 28 — the day of Mr. Bush’s State of the Union speech.

Accusing the administration of lying about the need for the war in Iraq, Mr. Kucinich said he did not need to hear the president’s
assessment. “We know the State of the Union,” he declared. “It’s a lie.”

He also fired a volley at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California
who has maintained that impeaching Mr. Bush is not on the table for Congressional Democrats. “If impeachment is off the table,” Mr. Kucinich said, “truth is off the table. If truth is off the table
then this body is living a lie.”

Mr. Kucinich introduced Articles of Impeachment against Vice
President Dick Cheney last April and in November, with the surprise help of Republicans seeking to embarrass the Democrats, he nearly succeeded in securing an hour of debate on the House floor. House Democratic leaders blocked that, however, by referring the impeachment effort back to the Judiciary Committee.

Anti-Bush groups have been urging Mr. Kucinich to undertake an
effort to impeach the president.

By formally retracting them. There are rules that govern speech on the floor of the House. He can call them liars, fuckwads, assholes and anything else off the floor and off the Congressional Record.

17. You know, I understand that the retraction doesn't erase the statement.
But, it is still important.

Public gestures matter.

Having no support from your party matters.

Rewriting the truth matters.

I want that IN the Congressional Record so when my kids ask what I did to prevent the hell they have to deal with, I can show them.

31. Because I believe the vice president's conduct of office has been destructive
to the founding purposes of our nation. Today, I have introduced House Resolution 333, Articles of Impeachment Relating to Vice President Richard B. Cheney. I do so in defense of the rights of the American people to have a government that is honest and peaceful.

(And this is the voice that is being silenced.)

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/01/iraq_falsehoods.html

It should be in the record. Not that we didn't know they were lying for years, but something does need to be stated for the record about the utter contempt for the American people shown by these criminals. They did lie. Brazenly. They lied to the American people nearly 1000 times in their public statements! 1000 times! That is staggering how numb we have become to their lies.

43. your support is pretty weak if you think that retracting a statement that broke rules
(you can't call someone a liar by name, it's rude)

Your support is pretty weak if you think that retracting a statement that broke rules is grounds for not supporting his bid for President.
