Sylvester Stallone Stands Behind Ultra-Violent Rambo
Still tiresome after all these years...

How has John Rambo changed?

"He's an atheist. Rambo thinks that God has forsaken him. He feels that people have forsaken him. I think there are a lot vets like him out there who have become mercenaries."

Is Rambo sort of a poster boy for macho men?

"I think he represents the males in society today who are quite pent up, holding it all in. If you express yourself too much, you're considered weak. There aren't a lot of opportunities for that rite of passage that makes you a man. War is one of them and violent sports are another."

What's your personal feeling about war?

"It's not your country you're killing for. It's for a few old men up top who want war. Old men start it. Young men fight it. Nobody wins. Everybody in the middle dies."

Can't wait to see this one, unless it means paying for a ticket

--sounds like this:

6. He's forgetting the old men who glorify violence in their films...
...and the old men who star in them.

8. The Ability to Disconnect
It's a valuable one. Like the the ability to enjoy a movie where shit blows up without running out and blowing shit up myself. Its an ability that 99.999% of the movie going population of the world enjoys.

The Rambo movies have been very violent, granted, but if you can put away your outrage at shit blowing up, there's a message there. A message that's surprisingly progressive.

10. I can't put away my outrage. Not completely.
I know that First Blood was also a portrait of the anguish of a forgotten vet, but I can't get around the movie's glorification of violence. Stallone built his career in large part on that foundation.

I did enjoy his ham-fisted attempt at comedy in Oscar, if not entirely for the reasons he'd prefer.

13. And now he's endorsing McCain?
It seems Stallone's having trouble achieving a disconnect between movie and real-life violence, too.

9. Half-Off-Topic, I enjoyed "Rocky Balboa"
Happened to see it on an airplane flight, and was surprisingly impressed. Like the first Rocky movie, Stallone had the bulk but not the pumped, ripped look. And not a "tied neatly in a bow" Cinderella ending.

14. It's an admission with extreme guilt on my part, but I liked Balboa also.

Lot's of pathos and grim depression in Balboa. And he stayed away from making his opponent into a 'villain'.

11. Atheists think we're forsaken by God? I thought we didn't believe in God.
