Pelosi, agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits...
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 03:35 PM by dajoki
Stimulus deal would help California homebuyers with jumbo mortgages
Most taxpayers would also get refunds of $600 to $1,200

Republicans, for their part, were pleased that the bulk of the rebates - more than 70 percent, according to an analysis by Congress' Joint Tax Committee - would go to individuals who pay taxes.

Under the stimulus deal, individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child. Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.

<<snip>>

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining the rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including those who make too little to pay income taxes.

<<snip>>

"I do not understand, and cannot accept, the resistance of President Bush and Republican leaders to including an extension of unemployment benefits for those who are without work through no fault of their own," Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y., the Ways and Means Committee chairman, said in a statement.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the Finance Committee Chairman, said leaving out the unemployment extension was "a mistake," as he announced plans to craft a separate stimulus package in the Senate.

4. John Edwards strongly disagrees with this deal

This is another example of Washington deserting working people and the middle class. They gave $70 billion of tax breaks that do nothing for those who've lost their jobs. It's a complete disconnect between what's happening in Washington and what I see happening here in South Carolina and across the country. We desperately need a modernization of the unemployment insurance law to cover more poor families and those who have lost their jobs. We also need to build an infrastructure for the clean energy economy that will create jobs and fight global warming.

38. I Have Wondered About That
I had such high hopes a year ago. Silly me even thought she would change her mind about impeachment once she learned the people of this country wanted the evil twins gone. It appeared to me during her last interview she made fun of people supporting impeachment. I don't watch a lot of TV but I will watch PBS. There are strict constitutional lawyers saying the crimes of this administration are impeachable and yet nothing gets done.

Does she realize the democrats have control? All Boner has to do is speak and she quakes. She must have left her spine in San Francisco. The people hurting the most will benefit the least.

10. Food Stamps and Unemployment Benefit increases "Are Off the
Table" - of course! It's Nancy's world - she does not drive thru South of Market, the Mission, Hunter's Point, the Tenderloin on her way to her mansion in Pacific Heights. We can't expect that she would have any clue what the rest of the population in her city, and district would need, let alone throughout the country! Nancy has enough on her table already anyway, she's busy. So what could be on Nancy's Table? Hmmmm? Let's see - six course meals paid for by the Getty's, fat checks from Chevron, hot stock tips for war manufacturers, promises for jobs with hedge funds for her kids, like Chelsea got?

All the good democrats who think that having a woman President - that we have waited so long for, just look at Nancy, the first woman Speaker of the House - what an achievement, what hope for the issues important to women, families, children - she has done so much with her power - oh, I forgot, any real changes are waved-off "That's off the table."

So dear people, having a woman in a position of real power, like President, does not in any way guarantee that the long hoped for changes would be fought for. Hillary and Nancy are made from the same cloth - the textile that most of us could never afford, we're too busy working to keep a roof over our heads and food "ON THE TABLE" for our families!

La de da, Nancy, enjoy the perks of your position. Just know that when you are gone, history will not treat you well for it will record that you will have botched your one great opportunity to effect a real set of positive changes for the people of this nation and by ripple affect, much of the world. So, I guess you must feel that your reputation is "Off the Table." Shame, Shame, Shame on you!

29. "small business" is the weasel-word..Who gets to define that term?
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 08:57 PM by SoCalDem
When I think of small business, I think of the neighborhood donut shop..the independent dry cleaners..the small Mom & Pop pharmacy..

when the government thinks of "small business", those are NOT the people they are thinking of..

Here's a pdf of some "small businesses" (according to the government)

36. My first response
upon reading this was a sharp, powerful single word that I have NEVER used on any female politician before, and rarely used on any human being. As an adult, I try to moderate the name calling, even when I'm pissed. I won't type the word here.

But I stand by my evaluation.

A temper tantrum isn't necessary to do the right thing.

You're right; I'd do better, because I'd do the right thing regardless of what Bush did. He can't veto everything. He can't veto his own impeachment.

49. If unemployment benifits are extended unemployment rates will go up
The reason for this is that if a person doesn`t recieve unemployment benifits they are not considered unenployed.Unemployment rates would most likely raise to 8 percent which would be closer to what the unemploment rates really are.
