The "stimulus" check is a pointless pay-off.

2. It was a wistful observation, nothing more.
I'd rather have director Ang Lee engage good actors in good films than get a junk check from the Bush administration.

5. Hi, sam sarrha. I thought those tax cuts were supposed to do the trick,
but here we are at Recession's gate.

Bush has an MBA in Business, doesn't he?! Somethin' ain't right.

10. That's my thought. The tax cuts weren't worth shit, so they're pushing to do A LOT MORE OF THEM.
But then I don't have an MBA bought from a fancy school so maybe that's why I don't understand.

I do remember when Republicans actually had some fiscal policy sense. But that was so long ago. Stockings had seams, breadwinners could support their families with one job, and Republicans were financially responsible politicians. *sigh*

18. Have you noticed some of the older Republicans still use the phrase "tax-and-spend liberal"
as though it MEANS something? (I've always been amused that the language artifact "getting down to brass tacks" as a synonym for "getting really serious" continues in the language -- even though I can NEVER find anyone who has a believable explanation of what it meant originally!)

It just rattles me to hear "tax-and-spend liberal" these days, since apparently the liberals are the only ones worrying about the horrible debt our country is accruing.

I feel that * put a lot of time and effort into his (unsuccessful) efforts to "privatize" Social Security, and since he never reconsiders a decision or an opinion, he's now trying a different tack to destroy SS -- bankrupting the country.

23.  Yes -- they're a slow bunch over there on the red team.
When they call us the tax-and-spend liberals, I kind of favor "bomb and abandon Republicans."

In any case, the trendlines aren't exactly very encouarge for the Right this time.

15. the Republican policy is that government is bad for business, so they cut taxes till the
government collapses, then sell off..privitize.. all the 'Commonwealth' to crony's.. toll roads, private schools, private security with license to kill.. etc etc.. with a lot of starving slaves willing to work in any conditions for any wages, willing to do anything to anyone to survive

16. Their Ideal World -- workers expecting no more than 13 cents an hour, and contraception banned
to assure endless oncoming generations of starving, 13-cents-per-hour workers.

When that Wall Street goony yesterday said the mortgage business needs to have regulations that will "standardize and bundle and commoditize mortgages to protect the investor" I bout busted a blood vessel.

People are losing their homes, and he's worrying about protecting the investor. Bah. Government regulation is just dandy with him, so long as it favors the very wealthy investor class. Like welfare is terrible, unless the largesse is given to Big Oil.

As a matter of fact, we just got home from the grand opening of Diane's new campaign headquarters which is very nice, BIG, and right on one of the main streets here in town (in a much more prominent location than Don Young's campaign office, which is on a side street about a block and a half away. ). We had lots of people show up, good food, Tlingit and Haida dancers, and great conversation -- lots of Edwards supporters there, too, which is heartening, and we'll all be showing up for the caucus on 2/5. We feel VERY good about Diane's chances this time around. If we can get her past the primaries, I think you'll be seeing her in DC. She is absolutely one of the best candidates I've ever run across.

This woman belongs in the House

24. A kind thought, Texas Explorer. And as for Ledger, he's done some
good work, although Director Ang Lee seems to have found the most complex and human of characters in him with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

33. And you knew first.
I'd read what you'd posted, cboy4, and it significantly influenced my post here.

Many film-goers I know didn't like Ang Lee's treatment of the story in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, but for me it was one of the rare instances where the film eclipsed the written narrative.

I thought the Thanksgiving Day meal scene was one of the most staggeringly excellent scenes in any film I've ever seen. Pretty close to perfect. And the scene at the end when Ledger's character visits the home of the parents. I don't think you can improve on fiilm-making like that.

Ledger must have known it would be risky for his career. And he saw the good of the film and he did it anyway.
