THE New York Times endorses Hillary and McCain-to what effect?

Primary Choices: Hillary Clinton
The Times�s editorial board strongly recommends that Democrats select Hillary Clinton as their nominee for the 2008 presidential election.

Primary Choices: John McCain
The senator from Arizona is the best choice for the Republican Party�s presidential nomination.

Are they now officially the "establishment candidates"?
Is there a backlash in either party?
Is this the voice of the political (DC)insiders serving notice that this has already been decided?

What effect if any will this endorsement have in your opinion?

1. I read the TIMES because it has some fine writers. I love Frank Rich and Bob

Herbert and the film reviewers are boffo.

Obviously I could do without Bill Kristol in much the same way I could do without colon cancer; I feel it's wise to make every effort to avoid both.

For me, the TIMES endorsement was significant in that their board chose McCain, a far Westerner perceived to be a "maverick," over native son Rudy. The TIMES' assessment of Giuliani was refreshingly brutal.
