The Daily Show and The Onion banned.........
My local school board, which has a righty majority, has been getting their ban on lately...

Board eyes curriculum issues

On the heels of community criticism about the School District of Beloit's new ban on R-rated movies the Board of Education debated Tuesday whether removing items on courses' curriculum would stir up similar complaints.

Two people, one a Beloit Memorial High student, spoke against the recent R-rated movie ban during the school board's business meeting, saying it limits students' education and is a form of censorship.

“What might we be tempted to ban in the future?” parent Ann Bausum said..........

..........The changes were presented by Beloit Memorial Principal Carlton Jenkins during a Curriculum and Instruction Committee meeting, so it wasn't as if board members pinpointed the materials - The Onion, The Daily Show, In Living Color and The Matrix - themselves.

Even so, Winkelmann said if it's a matter of sheltering teens from the materials' content they would get it and “a whole lot more” in college, and he pointed out edgier items tend to engage teens.

“I think we're moving down the wrong path in this,” he said.

I'm thinking that Jon Stewart and Olberman need to see this. Anyone have email addresses for them?

He's a prof at Beloit College and could probably get some good discussion going on this topic.

3. The Repukes began their takeover of the U.S. at the school board level....
... We need to start taking the country back from their filthy fingernails by running Dems for School board and throwing the mentally ill right wing bible-banging whackos into the dump.

I've always suspected these bible-banging whacko right wingers were secret pedophiles and sickos, and boy if it didn't turn out to be true, as we've seen in the past few years.

6. Yep. Many problems we have now had genesis at the local school board level
Grass roots at local government levels will be essential in taking the nation back from the agents and drones of the corporate takeover of our government.

The kids have been denied real education for over a generation now. We will continue to pay the price until we get critical thinkers with open minds back onto school boards all over the country.

... and work our way up. And yes, we need a GOOD education for our kids, not right wing lies and bible-banging bullshit to brainwash them with.

11. Brainwashing AND avoiding ANYTHING which encourages critical thinking skills
Controversial subjects, used as a vehicle to open discussions, teach, and hone observation and critical thinking skills, seems to be anathema to most RW school boards.

Guess what? There are more and more attempts to censor/ban books at local libraries now too.

Get involved in Library Boards in your community if you don't have the time for school board work. Libraries are under all sorts of RW formulated assaults now and could use good board members to advocate for and protect them. Not as much time required at the Library Board level in most communities, but DAMNED IMPORTANT. It is more important all the time as schools often make important materials unavailable and the cheney led assaults on freedom of information ramp up (and THEY have at libraries).

If you don't have the time at present to actually join a board, join a group which supports the institutions like schools and libraries. You can BET too many of those are also stacked with RW bots who will be happy to sacrifice their children's futures just to get a pat on the head from some PNAC enabler.

5. The Anal Retentives must have seen the scene of Shawn Wayans
giving birth when the baby squirts out and shoots across the room into the arms of Tommy Davidson. For "In Living Color", one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

I think Carlton and his committee need to get out more often.

8. I'm confused. How does the school board ban TV shows and movies?
It's not like kids are watching movies and TV during school hours, are they?

And hasn't In Living Color been in syndication for like 10 years?

9. Thats what i was thinking.........
In living color?

this all started when a kid ran home to mommy and said they were watching rated r movies in class.

my son goes to school at beloit memorial, and let me tell you, they are not watching cheech

and chong movies. they are watching movies which have some educational value such as "glory", to name one, but you know

what i'm talking about. the teachers now have to appeal any r rated movie to the school board to get permission.

it seems now that kids are reporting to their parents any little thing that mommy and daddy might find inappropriate.

the principal, superintendent, and majority of the school board are going crazy with this banning shit.

14. Our newly adopted curriculum,
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 07:47 PM by LWolf
written by the College Board, makes extensive use of video clips. A universal theme or a thinking/comprehension strategy is presented and practiced with video clips first, in the format universally used and understood by contemporary youth, and then applied to assigned readings.

Of course, they aren't whole movies; just video clips. I recently sent home a permission slip to show one of the PG13 movies in class; I thought the movie was an excellent choice for an 8th grade language arts class, and after watching the clips, the students wanted to know what happened in the film. I had them write an essay summarizing the plot and offering a review as a follow-up to watching it. All but 2 students had permission.

That's the policy in my district for showing any film. The film must be directly related to state curriculum standards, and parents must give written permission to see the specific film.

18. I don't get it.
Somebody mentioned the possibility of banning Onion and Daily Show from being used in class? Without specifically objecting to any content in those sources?

Unclear wording.
