Biggest "WTF?" of the morning:
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 11:32 AM by baldguy
In the U.S. south, is Canadian a new racial slur?

It was a routine e-mail from the boss sent to congratulate a junior prosecutor in Houston, Tex., who had won manslaughter convictions against an intoxicated driver.

"He convicted Mr. Sosa of a double intoxication manslaughter, got a weak jury to give him 12 years in each, and then convinced Judge Wallace to stack the sentences," Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent wrote in an office-wide memo. Then came the odd part: "He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing."

...

Mark Vinson, who was a chief prosecutor in the Harris County office at the time, said he was puzzled by the reference to Canadians when he got the e-mail but was too busy to give it much thought. Then some colleagues informed him about the slang meaning of Canadian, and he felt crushed.

9. Yes, and if you READ, you see it is a QUOTE from a TEXAS email.
If you are "quoting" a document, you don't change the spelling.

Hence, I look askance.

6. Lots of Canadians spend winters in the U.S. South
In January of 2004 hubby and I went to Florida to see family who live there. We drove down with a camper and stayed in several campgrounds. We saw lots of Canadian license plates and learned that Canadians come down for the good weather and go back north in the Spring. Perhaps something is developing. It doesn't make sense to me. But maybe our South is more conservative and the Canadians are more liberal.

8. The best thing to do is expose it - publicize it - as it appears that
some people think they are getting away with their little secret 'code word'. It disparages those it was intended for and a nation of people. Congrats to web sites like this that address it. That post-trial story is a little gift to humanity - we gained knowledge.

13. I remember a story about a politician who started using the name "Fred"
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 12:03 PM by rocknation
when his aides finally persuaded him that the n-word wasn't publicly acceptable anymore. So he'd talk about the number of "Freds" on a committee, a bill "a Fred" had proposed or giving a project to "that Fred."

17. Also code for...
...fuck you elitist socialists and your commie health care system and your nanny society liberal ideas and your pissy little military that won't help us in the glorious fight in against terror.

We're coming to get your oil and your water and there isn't a damn thing you can do about.

I may be overstating, but that's what I read into the use of "Canadian" as a slur. The USA! USA! yellow-ribbon-on-the-giant-diesel-pickup-truck crowd is particularly pissed off at how the tide's starting to shift in the US toward some kind of universal access health care system. Since it's not going to be single-payer like Canada's, you can bet it'll suck accordingly. But still, anything the GOP calls "socialist" is to be resisted by any means available.

They hate paying other people's medical bills for them (which is what they think is going to happen), they hate big gummint and they actually believed it when some manipulative industry stooge told them that any move away from for-profit medicine would kill their right to choose their doctor, and blah blah blah... Not that these pricks are usually very big on the right to choose, but...

It's the price we pay for living in a country that not only contains so many idiots, but actually celebrates anti-intellectualism as a real American value.

You know; this place:

20. That's why so many of em welcome the North American Union.
Steal Canada's natural resources because the U.S. OWNS the world. I've even seen people here on DU support this evil disgusting plan! :puke:

I am really worried about Canada being able to survive. :(

...Mike Trent wrote in an office-wide memo..."(The prosecutor) overcame a subversively good defense...that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and (he) forced them to do the right thing."

..."There is a double meaning to that word and I didn't know it. I was horrified when I learned what it was, and I immediately addressed the issue with the people who brought it up," Mr. Trent told a local Fox News reporter..."I'd never heard of Canadian being used as a term for a black person or for a racial slur..."If I had, I would never send that out in an office-wide e-mail..."

But YOU DID refer to the jurors as "Canadians," Trent--WHY??? More to the point, if you meant to write something OTHER than Canadians, WHAT WAS IT? Conservatives? Confectioners? Catholics? Columbians?

21. Well, I guess I do learn something every day
Never knew "Canadian" was used in a derogatory way like this, but I guess bigots will always find some word to communicate their feelings. So what they use when they really do mean "Canadian"?

Appears this email is actually from 2003, and is resurfacing as an issue now. More on this story from the Houston Chronicle:

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 04:27 PM by rocknation
Trent's response at the time: Freyer, the prosecutor commended in the e-mail, had used the term "Canadian" in a conversation and Trent took him literally, thinking there were real Canadians on the jury...(There were) indications of blacks on the jury but no Canadians. Trent sticks to his story.

"Do you guys think I'm crazy?" Trent wrote recently in response to a blog post. "Am I insanely stupid enough to send a racial slur to 250 LAWYERS? Litigious, complaint-ready lawyers, some of whom are African-American?? That is just absurd."

Does Trent think WE'RE crazy? Does he think WE'RE insanely stupid enough to believe that HE believed that 1) there actually WERE Canadians on the jury and 2) that he'd use language without actually knowing that he was talking about? You're LAYWER, Trent--an anal-retentive, fact-spinning, detail-crazy, word-parsing LAWYER! Most important, if you believe that Canadians can serve on U.S. juries, should you even BE a laywer? And you accuse US of being absurd!!!
